CANTON – The Canton/Galva volleyball team hosted a Volleyball Invitational on Saturday and placed fourth after going 2-3 in their five matches.

Starting out with Halstead, the Lady Eagles stumbled in their opening match of the day, losing in straight sets 17-25, 9-25, before bouncing back to battle long and hard with Sunrise Christian Academy for a three set victory (25-20, 23-25, 24-20) and even their record for the day at 1-1.

“We hosted our annual invitational yesterday and placed fourth,” noted Lady Eagle Head Coach Cloe Hedlund. “Our morning started out rough as one of our seniors went down with an ankle injury. We had to continue to adjust to a new line up throughout the day and struggled to keep the ball on our side of the court.”

After fighting through another long, hard fought three set battle in beating Solomon (25-18, 22-25, 25-23), Canton/Galva was set to face Little River in the invitational semifinals. Unfortunately, Little River seemed to have their number and beat the Lady Eagles in straight sets (9-25, 17-25) to put them in the game playing for third place. Once again, the Lady Eagles fought hard but could not overcome a stronger Wichita Home School squad and lost (12-25, 17-25) to finish fourth for the day.

“Our defensive game was pretty good throughout the day,” added Coach Hedlund as she concluded her coach reflections on the invitational. “We just couldn’t keep our offensive game going which resulted in a couple of games going to three sets and late losses. It was a long day of change and adjustments. We are proud of the players for taking on the challenge and still getting out of pool play.”

The Lady Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to tangle in a Quad at Goessel in what will be the last regular season match of 2019 before the Wheat State League Tournament on Saturday, October 19 in Solomon.
