BURRTON – The Elyria Christian volleyball team spent their Saturday in Burrton at the Burrton Volleyball Tournament and came home with a fifth-place finish after splitting four matches with two wins and two losses.

Against host Burrton in the Lady Eagles opening match, they took a tough 25-22 first set victory before getting hammered in set two, 13-25, and then losing a nail biter in set three, 23-25. Ryland Hawkinson had a superb game with five blocks and 11 digs while Kylee Penner scored five blocks as well plus six kills and seven digs.

Elyria lost their second straight match on the day when they faltered to Cunningham, losing in straight sets (7-25, 9-25).

In match three on the day, the Lady Eagles fought hard and tight for a straight set (25-20, 25-21) win over Fairfield as Merrick Robertson led the way with 15 digs and three aces while Alexus Swenson scored 14 digs.

Playing for fifth-place, Elyria salvaged their day with a second victory in a row on straight sets when they took down Berean Academy (25-19, 25-21), led by Lauren Aden’s 18 digs.

The Lady Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Peabody for a triangular with host Peabody/Burns and Little River.
