ELYRIA – According to Elyria Christian tennis coach Jim Bontrager they keep a sense of humor about the Lady Eagle tennis team by joking about ‘there is no I in team unless you’re on the Elyria tennis team.’

Well that I in team for the Lady Eagles tennis team is Shelby Bontrager, and while she may be the only one on the team, she is keeping busy.

Bontrager has been very busy in the past week as she competed in the Sacred Heart Invitational in Salina on Saturday, September 28 and finished 2-2 on the rain delayed day to finish third overall.

On Thursday, October 3, Bontrager once again finished 2-2 for her work at the Central Plains Invitational in Great Bend which was good enough for another third-place finish.

A highlight for Bontrager was representing the Lady Eagles on Saturday at the highly talented McPherson Doug Gayer Classic Invitational. Bontrager represented Elyria well as she once again went 2-2 for the day, a performance that put her seventh out of nineteen tennis players.

“Shelby has worked so hard throughout this season,” noted Elyria Head Coach Jim Bontrager. “To finish strong is just very rewarding for her and exactly what she needs to compete at regionals. Two-thirds of our scheduled tournaments are in the final two weeks before regionals. Shelby has had a very busy couple of weeks, and it’ll be nice to have four days in a row to prepare for regionals.”

Bontrager has concluded her and the Lady Eagles regular season schedule where she earned a 17-14 record. Elyria Christian will have Senior Night for Soccer and Tennis on Thursday, October 10 during a home soccer game.

Next up for Bontrager will be on Friday and Saturday, October 11-12 when she represents the Lady Eagles at Regionals in Hillsboro.
