It was a game that never seemed to be in doubt last Thursday as the McPherson Middle School eighth-grade football team hammered visiting Salina South by scoring a 40-0 shutout victory.

Without much doubt it was Kreighton Kanitz’s game as he led the Junior Pups by having a hand in five of the six team touchdowns while rolling up 201 in total offense on the day.

Kanitz scored twice on runs of 20 and 25 yards, while throwing for three scores, a 24 yarder to Drew Waner and then two, of 43 and 52 yards to Javyn Alexander. Madden Luttig scored the other Junior Pup touchdown on a 62-yard scamper.

“Things really went well this game and we are most proud of the fact since the night before the game we had one of our key offensive linemen could not play due to illness,” noted eighth-grade Head Coach TJ Jackson. “A guy stepped in and did a wonderful job for us. We also have three other starters out and two of them are two-way players.”

“Defensively we were phenomenal up front,” Coach Jackson continued. “The big guys up front set a tone and did not allow time to throw or the chance to run. Overall the defense gave up less than 10 yards when you factor in quarterback sacks and tackles for loss of yardage.”

Kanitz finished out the day completing six of fourteen passes for 138 yards and the three touchdowns while throwing just one interception. He also ran for 63 yards while Madden Luttig led the Junior Pups in rushing with 71 yards thanks to his late game 62-yard rumble. Javyn Alexander ended the game with three pass receptions totaling 102 yards as well.

“It was really the most fun when you can start to get everyone involved,” added Coach Jackson as he concluded his post-game reflections. “We had seven guys run the football and four catch at least one pass. We started slow but going into the halftime break the kids started to put it all together and gain some momentum with a few big plays. We did well with big plays, but overall, we need to stop relying on those. We must be able to sustain drives to continue to be successful. This game put us over the .500 mark for the season and I know they look to finish out the season with wins. Our goals as coaches is to try and go win a game or two which they possible didn’t win the year before. That is usually a good measure of the improvement we have seen. We hope to finish out the right way and have these guys be able to see their improvements.”

The Junior Pups eighth-grade football team will back on the competitive field next Thursday when they play host to Junction City.
