LINDSBORG – When you have an opponent with four running backs that roll for 75 yards or more in a game it is hard to get a victory and that is exactly what happened to the Smoky Valley football team at home on Friday as they suffered their third loss in a row with a 44-30 defeat at the hands of Clay Center.
While the Vikings put the only points on the board in the first quarter on a one-yard run by Raleigh Wilson followed by a Jake Lucas pass to Have Lysell-Stewart for the two-point conversion, giving Smoky Valley an early 8-0 advantage.
But once the game entered the second quarter, Clay Center began to get their running game in gear as they scored two touchdowns on the ground and one in the air before halftime while Smoky Valley did manage a short five-yard scoring pass from Lucas to Wilson to keep within reach on the scoreboard 20-14 as they entered the halftime break.
The Tigers doubled up on the scoreboard when they scored on a 57-yard breakaway run and then completed the two-point conversion to take a 28-14 lead into the final quarter of play.
While the Vikings put two more scores on the board on seven- and four-yard runs by Trey Kennedy, Clay Center broke the Smoky Valley defense for scores on two runs as well, one from 37 yards out to make the final score 44-30 in the favor of the Tigers.
Overall, the Vikings may have earned more first downs, 22-17, than the Tigers, they were outgained in total yardage 428-319, including 394 yards on the 35 running plays for Clay Center as they had four runners gain 126, 96, 75 and 75 yards respectively. Smoky Valley lost despite having the ball on offense 15 minutes more than Clay Center.
Individually, the Vikings offense was led by Trey Kennedy who ran for 132 yards on 29 carries and two scores while Raleigh Wilson covered 47 yards on 16 totes. Jake Lucas completed nine of twelve passes for 133 and a touchdown but did also throw an interception. Brandt Heble was his top receiver with three catches for 52 yards.
Andrew Peters recorded seven tackles to lead the Viking defense while Raleigh Wilson had 5.5 and Haven Lysell-Stewart got credit for 4.5. Tanner Luttig scored three tackles while also getting the Vikings only quarterback sack and a tackle for a loss.
Smoky Valley, now just 1-4 for the season, will be looking to get back in the win column when they travel to Chapman next Friday. Chapman is also 1-4 on the year and lost 14-0 to Rock Creek on Friday.
