For the second game in a row, the McPherson College men’s soccer team needed extra time to secure their fifth of the season and their third in KCAC conference play.
The Bulldogs hosted the Ottawa University Braves, and from the kickoff looked like the better team. The Mac men took 34 shots total and put 15 of those shots on frame while their opponents had just six total shots and only one of them forced the Bulldogs’ Valentin Bravo (Jr. Esparto, Calif.) into a save situation. Despite their dominance, the Bulldogs couldn’t seal the deal with a goal, which was due in large part to the play of the Ottawa goalkeeper.
After 90 minutes of scoreless play, the Bulldogs and Braves headed to overtime. Soccer is a fickle sport, where sometimes one team can dominate but still lose. Those that have played the game long enough have been on both sides. If those thoughts entered the minds of the Bulldogs, it didn’t show in their play. They continued to press on the offensive end of the field and were locked in on defense. Finally, in 8 minutes and 13 seconds into the first overtime session, Justus Koehler (Jr. Prosselsheim, Germany) took a pass from Jorge Abdiel Ramos Hernandez (Fr. Mesquite, Texas), and slotted the game winner in the bottom left corner of the goal.
“We created a lot of chances to score through our possession today,” said Bulldog head coach Doug Quint, “and I must give credit to their young man in goal.” Quint continued, “In my 17 years in the conference that was some of the best goal tending I’ve ever seen. He made things real difficult for us today.”
With the win, the Bulldogs move to 5-4 overall, and 3-1 in KCAC play. They will get a tough test next Tuesday when they go on the road to take on the Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes in Salina, Kansas. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
