The McPherson College women’s soccer team finally rose out of their slump and beat Ottawa University Saturday afternoon. Both sides were pushing at each other’s defensive lines to try and win the game; McPherson ended up withholding more stamina.
“I thought the team followed the game plan very well today against a good Ottawa team. Head Coach Mark Olson said, “Ottawa possessed the ball much of the game today, but we took advantage of our chances.”
The match was an even competition throughout both halves. McPherson’s defense was tested tremendously. Ottawa had more shots on goal at 14, and Mac had six. The first half was physical between teams with both getting the majority of their fouls then. After a scoreless chunk of the half, in the 42nd minute, there was a handball in Ottawa’s box and the Bulldogs were awarded a penalty kick. Emma Singleton (So. North Las Vegas, Nev.) sunk the goal bottom right corner, putting the Bulldogs up 1-0 to end the first half.
In the second half, in the 56th minute, senior forward Dina Der Vartanian (Sr. Pasadena, Calif.) won a tackle in the offensive upper half of the field that led to a two versus one player with Singleton as the player to pass to. Once Der Vartanian got an Ottawa player to step to her, the pathway was free for Emma Singleton to get the ball and finish the offensive play. This gave the Bulldogs a two goal cushion. After the second goal, Ottawa pushed back, but the centerbacks Bianca Avila (Jr. Rancho Cordova, Calif.) and Emily Segura (Fr. North Las Vegas, Nev.) held strong on the back line.
Sophomore goalie Christie Silber (Jr. Simi Valley, Calif.) was in goal for the Bulldogs. She had an amazing game between the pipes, finishing with eleven saves, earning her a third shutout for her record.
Head Coach Mark Olson said, “I thought our backline and goalkeeper played very well. This might be our best defensive game since entering league play.”
Now that the Bulldogs have secured their first season win, they are hungry for more. Their next game will be played on the road against Kansas Wesleyan at 5 pm next Tuesday.
