What began as a cloudy, rainy day eventually cleared off and become a playground for the McPherson High girls tennis program as they nearly dominated the 2nd Annual Doug Gayer Tennis Classic on Saturday at the McPherson High School Tennis Complex.

Named after the long-time, late Bullpup tennis coach Doug Gayer, the Classic had teams from throughout the state come in as 10 teams participated, including two representing the Bullpups and once the rain went away and the courts were cleared, the Lady Bullpups ruled the courts as their two teams finished first and tied for second overall while individually they finished in the top five with six of the eight competitors.

“After the rain cleared it was a terrific day of tennis for the second Annual Doug Gayer Classic!” noted Lady Bullpup Head Coach Tyler Brown as he handed out plenty of appreciation for the Classic helpers. “I must thank Brian Guffey again from Hometown Tire and Turf for helping get the court cleared with his blower. I also want to thank the Dad’s of players, coaches, everyone that helped get the courts ready so quickly! It was also nice to see Nancy Shaw again by helping us run the Wall Park site.”

Overall, McPherson had two teams represented with the Lady Bullpups White team scoring the Classic Team Championship with 68 points while the Lady Bullpup Red team finished tied for second with Hutchinson with 46 points. Haysville/Campus rounded out the top four while Salina South, Garden City, Hays, Elyria Christian and Liberal were the other teams competing.

As for the individual results, representing the Lady Bullpup White team, Perrin Schneider in singles and the dynamic doubles duo of Taylor Bruce and CeAnna Allen both went 4-0 for the day and earned first place finishes. Schneider won her gold by defeating teammate Rachel Carlson in the singles championship match.

The other McPherson White doubles combo of Patty Huerta and Maddie Dobson, plus the McPherson Red doubles teams of Sydney Achilles and Taylor Berger, and Layknn Lippelmann and Amethyst Hale ended up covering the third, fourth and fifth place trophies with the duo of Achilles and Berger beating Huerta and Dobson for third.

“For our teams to finish fist and second out of ten teams was outstanding,” added Coach Brown. “Taylor (Bruce) and CeAnna (Allen) were on point again with their closest match being 8-3 in the semifinals against Sydney (Achilles) and Taylor (Berger)! That lets you know the day that Sydney and Taylor had. They beat a solid Great Bend team (8-2) and then beat Patty (Huerta) and Maddie (Dobson) in an exciting match that went the distance 8-7 (10). Lakynn (Lippelmann) and Amethyst (Hale) also had an awesome day going 3-1 on the day only losing to a Salina South team that finished I believe ninth at state last year.”

Regarding the play of the single matches, Coach Brown continued by saying, “Singles also had an outstanding day finishing first and second. Perrin (Schneider) and Rachel (Carlson) played extremely well all day long. Grace (Witte) was a warrior playing a total of six matches since she was one of the ‘play in’ matches to start the day and she went 4-2 to finish the day 10th. Carley (Malm) rounded out team white by going 2-3 and finishing 12th.”

The Lady Bullpup tennis team does not have time to rest as they turn around and play host on Monday to the AVCTL (Ark Valley/Chisholm Trail League) tournament which will include the number one team (Wichita Collegiate) in Class 4A along with the team tied with McPherson as number two, which is Buhler.
