McPHERSON – On what was a near perfect day for tennis, the McPherson High girls tennis team played host to the 2019 AVCTL (Ark Valley – Chisholm Trail League) Division III & IV tournament on Monday and placed second as a team while Taylor Bruce and CeAnna Allen continued to dominate in number one doubles by winning the tournament title.

For the day, the Lady Bullpups finished second with 55 points, nine points behind league champion Wichita Collegiate. Circle and Buhler rounded out the top four with 39 and 38 points respectively.

“It was a beautiful day for tennis with low winds and 70 degrees,” declared Lady Bullpup Head Coach Tyler Brown. “It doesn’t get much better than that. I thought we had tremendous fight today but Wichita Collegiate gave us our first team loss in a tournament and showed why they are number one in Class 4A. They just played better as a whole than we did. They made it to the finals in every division and won some big match ups especially knocking off Wellington in the number one doubles division which were 23-0 coming in on the day.”

Bruce and Allen scored another perfect 3-0 mark for the day at number one doubles, including a win against a highly talented duo from Wichita Collegiate, to take first while upping their season record to 27-0!!

Rachel Carlson also represented the Lady Bullpups in a finals match as she went 2-1 for the day and took second in number two singles.

All the Lady Bullpups finished in the top four of their divisions as Patty Huerta and Maddie Dobson went 2-1 to place third in number two doubles and Perrin Schneider finished 1-2 to place fourth in number one singles.

“On a high note,” Coach Brown said as he continued with his post tournament reflections. “Taylor (Bruce) and CeAnna (Allen) improved to 27-0 by the end of the day. Rachel (Carlson) was a warrior playing three matches in a row that went the distance. She split sets in all three matches and had to play a super breaker in every match to decide the match. It was the third match in the finals that she dropped her first super breaker. It was fun to see that kind of fight from her all day long.”

“Perrin (Schneider) is playing some of her best tennis and even though she finished fourth she is looking extremely good,” noted Coach Brown. “Patty (Huerta) and Maddie (Dobson) only lost to Wichita Collegiate as well. Once they made their minds up and started to play to their potential, they closed out their final match to finish third.”

Coach Brown concluded his comments by throwing praise towards his assistant coach Ricardo Sanchez, by saying, “Coach (Ricardo) Sanchez and I have our work cut out for us to figure out what our Regional team will be! I can’t thank Coach Sanchez enough in his first year stepping into a new role. It has been nice to be able to turn him loose and just let him coach and do his thing especially when we have four matches on and only two coaches to try and cover them.”

The Lady Bullpup tennis team will be back on the courts on Saturday when they travel north to play in the Salina Central Invitational that will also include Great Bend, Hays, Maize, Newton, Salina South and Valley Center.
