PRATT – As they have all season, the Smoky Valley girls tennis team battled Hesston for league supremacy at the CKL (Central Kansas League) Girls Tennis Championship on Monday in Pratt with the Swathers holding the final trophy as the Lady Vikings placed second.

While Hesston scored 60 team points, Smoky Valley ended the day with 50 which was only good for second while Lyons and Larned tied for third with 26 points each. Other teams in the CKL and competing in order of final team standings were Hoisington, Hillsboro, Pratt, Haven and Nickerson.

Individually the Lady Vikings had what many could say was a solid day as they took second in all four divisions, unfortunately they lost each one to the team representing Hesston.

In number one doubles, Smoky Valley’s Lena Rauchholz lost (4-6, 3-6) while the Lady Viking’s top seed in number two singles, Isabelle Wright was upset (1-6, 6-2, 7-10) by Megan Martin of Hesston.

Rachel Yenni and Karik Elliott came in seeded number two in number one doubles and finished in the same spot, losing (2-6,5-7) to number one seed Michaela Martin and Mackenzie Unruh of Hesston.

The Lady Vikings had the number one seed in number two doubles with Emily Jones and Elaina McMillan only to once again come up short against Hesston, losing in the finals (3-6, 6-7,(1-7)).

Next up for the Lady Vikings tennis team will be spending Friday and Saturday playing in the Class 3A regionals at Hillsboro.
