The McPherson Middle School seventh-grade volleyball ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams closed out their 2019 season with a clean sweep of a home triangular with Salina Lakewood and Chapman on Monday.

In the ‘A’ game, the Junior Lady Pups dismantled Chapman in their opening match, winning in straight sets (25-9, 25-8) before crushing Salina Lakewood (25-6, 25-9) in straight sets as well in their final match of 2019. With the two wins, the ‘A’ team closed the season with a 22-5 record.

“What a way to end our season,” exclaimed seventh-grade Head Coach Shelley Bohme. “Chapman took a quick 3-0 lead when we struggled to serve receive, then Kelby (Boughfman) served 14 straight points in set one to get us going. Our serving was a little more balanced in set two and we played with enthusiasm while doing a great job passing the ball and getting it set to our hitters. Against Salina Lakewood, Kelby, Josie (Fitzmorris), Addison (Chapman), and Haley (Hagemann) were the only players to serve in set one as all served five in a row. In set two, Haley had the hot serving hand, serving 10 points in a row.”

Talking about her players, Coach Bohme continued by saying, “With Chapman and Salina Lakewood both struggling to return serves, our defense did not have much to do. When the ball did come back over, Kenzi (Kaufman), Izabel (Backhus), Cora (Pavlovich), and Addison covered well and consistently got the ball up. Haley, Cora, Josie, and Addie (Herrera) were all solid at the net. It was fun to watch the girls really enjoy playing and finish out the season with a couple of wins at home.”

Coach Bohme concluded her reflections by adding, “These girls had a great season. They really improved and grew as a team. This group has amazing potential, and I can’t wait to watch them over the next few years!”

As for the ‘B’ team performance, they manhandled Chapman in straight sets (25-7, 25-12) before getting a bit of a battle out of Salina Lakewood before putting them away with ease in straight sets as well (25-20, 25-8). With the two wins, the seventh grade ‘B’ team concluded the 2019 season with just one loss behind 26 victories.

“I can’t believe how fast this season went!” noted ‘B’ team Coach Abby Bradstreet. “These girls did absolutely incredible tonight and throughout the whole season. They were so much fun to coach and I’m so proud of them all. We did a great job serving and setting the ball up tonight. Overall our communications and enthusiasm was up and it was a fun way to end our season.”

Coach Bradstreet concluded her reflections by saying, “These girls have come such a long way since our first practice, and I can’t wait to watch them continue to grow throughout the years to come!”
