NEWTON – It may have been the best meet of the season on Tuesday for the McPherson Middle School cross country teams as they closed out the 2019 regular season runs at the Newton Invitational.
A total of nine Junior Pup harriers scored medals on the day, including Kayla Porter who brought home a first-place finish for the seventh-grade Junior Lady Pups. It was Kayla’s first time to finish first.
“The runners had their best meet of the year by far today,” noted Junior Pup Head Coach Nicholous Rempe. “All of them ran really strong and smart races. It was a very windy day, but nearly all of them ran season best times, while half of the runners medaled and Kayla (Porter) was able to win her first race of the season. Today’s races should give them confidence heading into the League meet.”
The eighth-grade Junior Lady Pups had all five runners finish in the top-20 and earn medals, including Keanna Sullivan (10th) and Renae Hendricks (15th) placing in the top-15.
Almost as impressive was the eighth-grade Junior Pup boys as three of the four runners earned medals and all of them, Kale French (10th), Jaiden Strickland (11th), and Hunter Mendez (15th) placing in the top-15.
The McPherson Middle School cross country teams will close out their 2019 season next Tuesday when they host the Pioneer League Cross Country Championships at Rolling Acres beginning at 4:00 p.m.
