BULLPUPS OVERCOME ORIOLE OFFENSE, WIN 56-14!

AUGUSTA – It was not the normal start of a game for any Bullpup fan as the McPherson High football team found themselves down 7-0 on the scoreboard before they even had a chance to touch the ball offensively.
Augusta opened the game with an offensive drive that covered 80 yards and put the Orioles in the end zone to post a 7-0 lead on the scoreboard, leaving the faithful red clad Bullpup followers possible wondering what the heck just happened.
It only took a few moments for the Bullpups to change that as Aaron Powell took the ensuing kickoff and zipped 85 yards down the field for a touchdown and with the Drew Schrader extra-point kick, McPherson had tied the score 7-7.
After another short drive, the Bullpup defense stood their ground and force the Orioles to punt, which was then returned 58 yards to the end zone by the Bullpups Jakob Feil, giving McPherson a temporary 14-7 advantage before they even had a change to run an offensive play.
While Augusta did get another drive for a score to make it 14-14 at the end of the first quarter, it was all McPherson on the scoreboard after that as they rattled off 42 points and two scores per quarter to gain their final 56-14 victory.
The remaining Bullpup scores included two scoring runs each from Kaleb Hoppes (of 7 and 10 yards) and Feil (of 2 and 26 yards) as well as one from Aiden Hoover covering 17 yards and a scoring pass that Jonah Clarke caught from Hoppes that covered 10 yards. Schrader was a perfect eight-for-eight in extra point kicks on the day as well.
If one did not know the final score but were given the stats for the game, one would think that Augusta had won the game or kept it very close as they actually outgained the Bullpups in total offense with 315 yards to the Bullpups 302 while running an amazing 74 offensive plays to only 37 by McPherson. But no, the Bullpups prevailed despite giving up 292 yards on the ground, much due to some key defensive plays such as a timely interception by Mason Thrash when the Orioles tried to fake a punt, a key fumble recovery and three tackle for a loss of yardage when they were needed the most.
While the Orioles quarterback sliced the Bullpup defense to the tune of 140 yards, the Bullpups were able to counter it with the running of their quarterback Hoppes who picked up 89 yards on just eight carries, diminutive tailback Jakob Feil and his 70 yards on eight totes along with the contribution of 34 yards on six carries for Matt Ramey. Hoppes also threw for 91 yards on seven pass completions, five of which went to Aaron Powell for 78 of those yards.
Defensively, Thrash not only had the key interception, he also recorded six tackles while assisting on eight others and dropping Oriole runners twice for a loss of yardage. Jayton Alexander added five tackles while helping on four others. The defense did play without all-stater and Kansas State commit, Cody Stufflebean, who appeared to hurt his knee and did not appear in the game beyond the first few offensive snaps.
The Bullpups now turn their attention to the game next Friday when they play host to Rose Hill. Rose Hill is currently 2-4 for the season and will be coming off a 28-14 loss to Mulvane.
