VIKING OFFENSE STRUGGLES IN LOSS TO CHAPMAN!

CHAPMAN – It was not a good Friday night for the Smoky Valley football team as they traveled to Chapman and were unable to get the offense going and keep the Chapman offense off the field while suffering a 34-8 loss to the Fighting Irish.
Chapman jumped on Smoky Valley for three scores in the first quarter to take an early 20-0 lead before the Vikings were able to capitalize on an offensive drive and get on the scoreboard with a one-yard dive into the end zone by Raleigh Wilson early in the second stanza. Jake Lucas then dropped a pass into the hands of Trey Kennedy for the two-point conversion to pull within a couple of touchdowns. Unfortunately, the Fighting Irish scored again before halftime to take a commanding 26-8 advantage into the break.
The Viking offense could not stay on the field and the defense could not stop the Chapman running game and while the Fighting Irish added one more score in the third quarter, the final tally of 34-8 was on par with the stats for the game.
For the whole game, the Viking offense only had the ball for a hair under 12 minutes while Chapman controlled the field for nearly 33 minutes as they ran 62 plays to Smoky Valley’s 30. The Fighting Irish rolled up 340 yards in offense including a total of 255 yards rushing on 53 carries, while the Vikings had just 114 yards in offense total. It didn’t help that Smoky Valley was only able to gain eight first downs to the Fighting Irish’s 22, much due to making three turnovers on two fumbles lost and a pass interception.
Individually, most of the Viking offense came from the running of Raleigh Wilson and Trey Kennedy who gained 41 and 40 yards respectively. Kennedy also led the defense as he made 10.5 tackles, with eight of those being solo stops. Haven Lysell-Stewart and Justin Holt each recorded 7.5 tackles while Andrew Peters had six of which four were solo.
The loss drops the Vikings to just 1-5 on the season as they prep for a tough battle next Friday when they go on the road to play unbeaten Halstead, who defeated Clay Center 45-20 on Friday.
