MCPHERSON – While the weather was a bit dismal, it still did not stop the McPherson Middle School eighth-grade football team from leaning on their defense in scoring a lackluster 2-0 victory of Junction City at home last Thursday.

The Junior Pup defense stepped up when they had the Junction City offense pinned in front of their own end zone and dropped them in that end zone to score the two-point safety which proved to be all they needed for the victory.

“We won 2-0 in a very underwhelming performance offensively,” explained eighth-grade Head Coach TJ Jackson. “We have a lot of guys who think very highly of themselves, not scoring a touchdown is pretty representative of how we actually played. Until we can run the right routes, come off the ball and sustain blocks, we will be relying on our defense to keep us in the games against good teams.”

Coach Jackson concluded his reflections on the underwhelming performance by saying, “Our defense really did a job and came through several times. Junction City got down inside the 10-yard line just one time all game and we had two tackles for loss there for major losses. The only favor the offense did us was getting the ball inside the four-yard line one time so our defense could stop them for a safety. We know these guys can play better, but it is going to take everyone doing their job right. We haven’t been able to put together a complete game against a quality opponent yet.”

The Middle School eighth-grade Junior Pup football team will finish out their 2019 season on Thursday, October 17 when they play host to Hutchinson.
