LARNED – It was an outstanding day for the Smoky Valley cross country teams on Thursday at the Central Kansas League Meet in Larned, as both the Viking boys and Lady Vikings took second as a team while Ryan Heline won himself a league title.

Heline covered the course in 17:05 to take first for the Vikings in the varsity boys division while Stephen Peterson, Garret Huffman and Lukas Apel all medaled and scored top ten finishes. The team finished second overall.

The Lady Viking harriers also took second as a team as Gracie Lambert placed third, Olivia Bengtson landed in sixth and Kajsa Peterson ran ninth and all earned medals.

“We had a successful meet in Larned,” noted Viking Head Coach Holly Toll in her post meet reflections. “However, we would have preferred to come back with two league championships. Ryan (Heline) ran well for the boys to come away as the league champion. Three other boys earned medals. Gracie (Lambert) ran a great race and finished third. Olivia (Bengtson) and Kajsa (Peterson) also were league medalists. The girls only ran with five varsity runners since Ellise (Peterson) is hurt and out for the rest of the season while Zoe (Grace) was ill. The boys finished behind Halstead by just one point which is so disappointing, but we hope that it will help us be more aware of how one place can make a difference.”

It wasn’t just the varsity Viking runners that had outstanding days as Ashlyn Bryant and Nevada Acheson ran second and third in the junior varsity girls division, while Trevor Jones, Caden Kibler, Logan Bodenhamer and Cayce Lindstrom placed sixth, seventh, ninth and tenth respectively in the junior varsity boys race.

For the Junior Viking middle school teams, they were led by Sophia Fruits who won the seventh-grade girls division and the eighth-grade Junior Viking boys who won the league title led by Samuel Peterson who ran second on the day. Kenzie Heline ran third for the Junior Lady Vikings eighth-grade team.

Next up for the Viking cross country varsity runners will be the state regionals on Saturday, October 26.
