McPHERSON –  It was not as pretty as many had hoped for senior night, and it kept many of the home crowd on the edge of their seats at times, but the McPherson High football team still managed to stay unbeaten and hold off the feisty visitors from Rose Hill for a 31-7 victory on Friday.

Despite the seemingly closer game than most thought it would be, Rose Hill does drop to 2-5 for the season with the loss, while the Bullpups for the second time this season needed some home field magic to get the upper hand and control of the ball game.

After Kaleb Hoppes put the Bullpups on the scoreboard in the first quarter with a 24-yard scoring run, the Rockets snuck up and had an early second quarter drive that ended with a four-yard scoring dive into the end zone and tying the game up at 7-7.

Then a little bit of that home field magic lit up the Bullpup special teams in the name of Aaron Powell as he returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yards to the end zone to put McPherson back in front 14-7 after Drew Schrader made another extra-point conversion kick. Hoppes scored again, this time on a 10-yard scamper into the end zone, and with another successful extra-point kick by Schrader, gave the Bullpups a little breathing room and a 21-7 advantage going into the halftime break.

Due to some untimely offensive errors, McPherson only scored one more time in the game on a one-yard dive across the goal line by Jakob Feil in the third quarter and then after Schrader converted the extra-point try and added a field goal in the fourth quarter, the Bullpups escaped the evening with their 31-7 victory.

After Rose Hill ran an impressive 37 plays in the first half, the Bullpup defense made some much-needed adjustments and keep control of the game and gain the victory. That defense was led by Jonah Clarke who had just four tackles in the game along with two assists, but those accounted for the only two quarterback sacks by the McPherson defense and three of the six tackles for losses. Brycen Labertew led the Bullpups overall with eight total tackles.

Overall, the Bullpups did outgain Rose Hill, 269-239, in total offense as both teams made the chains move with the Rockets earning 13 first downs while the Bullpups had 15. Both teams threw the ball 25 times with Rose Hill completing a dozen for 148 yards while Kaleb Hoppes connected on 14 for 127 yards for the Bullpups, though he also had two interceptions. On the ground, McPherson covered 142 yards while the Rockets did not make it to the century mark as they had but 91.

Individually, Jakob Feil was the workhorse for the Bullpups, running the ball 20 times for 103 yards while also catching of couple of passes for another 10. While Aiden Hoover covered 45 yards on his one pass reception, Aaron Powell continued to be the quarterback favorite go to receiver as he hauled in six passes for 34 yards.

With the win the Bullpups remain unbeaten at 7-0 and will stay atop the rankings for Class 4A as they prep for their final regular season game of the 2019 season on Friday, October 25 in Towanda to battle Circle. Circle will enter the game just 1-6 for the season and will be coming off a 40-6 beat down at the hands of Independence.
