HOPE – It was a rough day for the Canton/Galva volleyball team on Saturday at the Wheat State League Tournament as they came in seeded number five but came home winning just one of five matches.
The day started out good as the Lady Eagles scored a 25-17 first set win over Goessel before losing each of the next two sets and match (24-26, 19-25).
Powerhouse Rural Vista then hammered Canton/Galva in straight sets (12-25, 7-25) before the Lady Eagles continued to struggle in losing to both Herington (11-25, 17-25) and Little River (18-25, 23-25) in straight sets as well.
“We came into the Wheat State League tournament seated fifth,” noted Lady Eagle Head Coach Cloe Hedlund. “Our players started off strong with a win in the first set against Goessel but struggled to stay consistent in the last two sets so couldn’t pull off the win. We struggled the next three matches to keep our offense alive which resulted in a lot of hustle on defense but couldn’t get points on the board.”
Finally, after losing four straight matches, the Lady Eagles found a groove and earned their first win of the tournament by taking down Elyria Christian in straight sets (25-9, 25-13).
Coach Hedlund concluded her post tournament reflections by saying, “Our last game against Elyria, we were much more consistent, and we served the ball well.”
The Lady Eagles will now prep for Sub-State next Saturday, October 26.
