AUGUSTA – The McPherson High boys soccer team split their scoring evenly between two halves on their way to a 6-1 road victory over Augusta on Tuesday.

It was Britton Haigh who put the host Orioles in a state of shock as he blasted an assist from Drew Schrader into the goal just 23-seconds into the game, then followed that up with his second score of the game less than two minutes later off an assist from Jael Jaime.

Trenton Stecklein added a third goal in the first half for McPherson off a second assist from Jael Jaime, giving the Bullpups a 3-1 advantage going into the halftime break.

Drew Schrader got into the scoring column in the second half with the Bullpups fourth score of the game, this time on an assist from Rhett Edmonson. Caden Hardgrave scored the final two goals of the game for McPherson with assists from Schrader and Jael Jaime’s third one of the game.

“This was an important game tonight for league bragging rights as well as post season seeding and it couldn’t have started any better,” noted Bullpup Head Coach Chris Adrian. “The boys were moving the ball so well and playing great soccer. We had several opportunities to deliver the knockout blow and make the game comfortable, but the goal post was Augusta’s best friend as we hit it three times in the first half alone.”

For the game the Bullpups had a total of 28 shots on goal while Nathan Lloyd once again sparkled in goal for McPherson with two saves.

Coach Adrian closed out his post-game reflections by saying, “Their goalkeeper also had a great game and made some big saves. Augusta was able to get one goal back toward the end of the first half on a great shot, but it was against the run of play as we dominated possession of the ball and finished with 28 shots on goal for the day. Caden Hardgrave once again had an excellent game and showed that he’s not only a great defender, but also an excellent attacker. He’s a great weapon to have attacking from the back line. This team is in a great spot right now, and the win guarantees a top four seed for post season play.”

The Bullpup junior varsity kickers played to a 0-0 tie.

The Bullpups will be back on the field Thursday when they travel west to Great Bend.
