TOWANDA – They’ve done it again! The McPherson High football team has finished their regular season unscathed at 8-0 for the second season in a row as they scored a 49-0 hammering of Circle on the road Friday.

It was full speed ahead from the opening kick on Friday as the Bullpups piled up 28 points in the first quarter on two scoring runs by Jakob Feil of 14 and 2 yards, a 6-yard scoring scamper from Kaleb Hoppes and 26-yard pass from play from Hoppes to Gus Ruddle.

The Bullpups then added three more scores in the third quarter as Hoppes connected twice for touchdowns, once on a 51-yard play to Trey Buckbee and another covering 12 yards to Jayden Dukes. Matt Ramey closed out the McPherson scoring with a 20-yard dash to the end zone, giving the Bullpups their 49-0 shutout victory. Drew Schrader, senior Bullpup soccer star and now football placekicker, was a perfect seven-of-seven on his extra point attempts.

According to the stats the Bullpups may have had their best game of the season, especially when you look at how balanced the attack was against Circle as they gained 518 total yards on 66 plays, with 253 of those yards coming through the air and the other 265 yards produced on 27 carries of the pigskin.

Defensively, the Bullpups held the T-Birds to just 109 yards on 56 offensive plays. Circle only managed 29 yards on 28 carries rushing the ball and completed just six of 21 pass attempts for another 80 while the Bullpups picked off two of those passes.

Individually, the Bullpups were led by senior quarterback Kaleb Hoppes as he connected on 16 of 29 passes for 249 yards and three scores while also taking 10 rushing attempts that covered another 118 yards which means Hoppes accounted for 367 of the teams 518 yards of offense.

Other Bullpup leaders for the evening were Matt Ramey who plugged in for 93 yards on seven totes of the ball while sophomore Trey Buckbee caught five passes for 101 yards and junior Aaron Powell gained another 80 on five receptions.

On defense, McPherson stopped the T-Birds for a loss of yardage six times, including three by senior Kourtney Craig, who also recorded a quarterback sack while Hoppes and Jayton Alexander snagged two pass interceptions.

Like it is being said – this is the second season in a row that the Bullpups have closed the regular season with a perfect 8-0 record and will carry the banner of being the number one seed into the Class 4A West Playoffs that begin next week.

The first game of the playoffs for the Bullpups will be against Abilene, a team which never won a game this season and was hammered by the Bullpups 48-3 back in week four despite the game being halted at halftime due to weather issues.

One reminder to Bullpup fans – McPherson will now have the home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
