CANTON – For the second time this season the Canton/Galva football team handled Chase County without much effort as they buried the visitors on Thursday, 46-0, in the first game of the 8-Man Division I state playoffs. Ironically the score was identical to the game the two teams played in the second weekend of the season.

Brayden Collins may not have led the Eagles in rushing for the game, but he did break into the end zone twice in the first quarter on runs from 15 and 9 yards out before adding a third score to his stat sheet before halftime with a three-yard plunge for the score that gave Canton/Galva the point rule victory.

After Brandon Huff scored on a two-yard dive into the end zone in the first quarter on his only carry of the game, the Eagles quarterback and all-state leader Landon Everett bolted in from 32 yards out to end the first quarter scoring before jetting in from 31 yards to get the first score in the second quarter.

Everett also dove in to score five of the six converted two-point conversions.

As a team, the Eagles only had the ball on offense for a hair over eight minutes compared to Chase County dominating time of possession with nearly 28 minutes. But don’t let the time of possession fool you as Canton/Galva ran 27 plays in those eight minutes while covering 225 yards, good for 8.3 yards every time they ran an offensive play. With 169 yards coming on 18 rushing plays, Everett only attempted nine passes, completing five for 56 yards when they needed them.

Besides his 56 yards passing, Everett also ran the ball for 104 yards on just seven carries while Brayden Collins covered 63 yards on 10 totes. Huff touched the ball just twice on offense, one on the touchdown run and the other on a key pass reception that gained a much needed 23 yards for the Eagles. Tyler Rummel led the team in receptions with two for 19 yards.

While Chase County may have dominated the time on offense, the Eagles defense kept them shutdown and struggling to gain any meaningful yards as the visitors only gained 92 yards on 40 offensive plays or just 2.3 yards per attempt. The Eagle stingy defense kept their running attack in check by only allowing 46 yards on 24 carries.

Leading that stingy Canton/Galva defense was Conner Koehn who totaled six tackles on the night, including a pair that went for minus yardage. Brandon Huff and Landon Everett each recorded 4.5 tackles while Garrett Maltbie had four.

The Eagles are still perfect on the season with an unblemished 9-0 mark which includes every game being over early due to the point rule in 8-Man Division I. Next Friday, November 8, the Canton/Galva could face a true test in the next round of the state playoffs as they will be matched up to play Lebo who is now 7-2 for the season after thumping Goessel 58-8 on Thursday.
