JETMORE – After a very lengthy road trip, the Moundridge football team ran into a buzz saw with Hodgeman County while struggling with turnovers and that equaled out to as season ending 54-0 loss in the first round of the 8-Man Division I state playoffs on Thursday.
With the loss the Wildcats close out their 2019 season with a 4-5 record.
Moundridge struggled from the opening kickoff as they were pinned against the goal line at the beginning of the game and it ended up badly for the Wildcats as quarterback Corbin Unruh was tackled in the end zone for a safety and an early 2-0 lead for Hodgeman County.
The Longhorns then went to the air and scored four touchdowns in the first quarter, all on pass plays ranging from 14 to 55 yards out. Converting three of the four two-point conversions, the Longhorns built a commanding 32-0 advantage after the first quarter of play.
Two more long touchdowns with their passing and one short burst on a run and the Longhorns pulled away to score the 54-0 shutout victory as they now advance into the second round of the state playoffs.
Moundridge was able to keep the ball on offense just a little over eight minutes in the game as they made turnover after turnover with two lost fumbles and a whopping five interceptions on attempted pass plays. The turnovers, especially on the pass plays, hurt some success they were having as Corbin Unruh did complete 11-22 passes for 131 yards. The Longhorns stymied the Wildcat rushing attack, limiting them to 45 yards on 19 carries.
Unruh also led the Wildcats in rushing with 30 yards while Jon Schlosser was the go-to receiver as he hauled in six passes covering 95 yards.
When Hodgeman County had the ball, they torched the Wildcat defense for 228 yards and six touchdowns on just nine pass completions. They also ran for 128 yards on 16 totes of the ball while committing just one turnover. The Wildcat defense did get an interception from Corbin Unruh while Brady Helms, Garrett Doherty and Anthony Everhart led the way with five, four-and-a-half and four tackles respectively.
