MCPHERSON – For the second time this season the McPherson High football team dismantled Abilene at home on Friday when they scored a 63-7 victory in round one of the state Class 4A playoffs.

Now 9-0 for the season, the Bullpups will now be matched up with Goddard in next Friday’s regional final. Goddard will come into the game with a modest 4-5 mark for the season after beating Rose Hill on Friday 32-14. Bullpup nation will remember last season when Goddard stonewalled the McPherson offense and scored a 15-14 upset victory to end the 2018 season for the Bullpups.

Earlier in the season McPherson hammered Abilene 48-3 in a game that was called at halftime due to weather. On Friday, the Bullpups pretty much repeated that performance with a first half beat down of 49-0 going into the halftime break.

When someone like Cody Stufflebean returns to the lineup after being out with an injury, they make a grand re-entrance, and Stufflebean did just that in the first quarter by blocking a kick which was then picked up by Brycen Labertew who dashed for the end zone and earned the Bullpups first score of the night.

Jakob Feil squirted in from four yards out later in the first quarter to give the Bullpups a 14-0 advantage before Kaleb Hoppes dove in from the one and then connected with Aiden Hoover from 27 yards out to add two more scores on the scoreboard and give the home team a whopping 28-0 first quarter lead.

In the second quarter the Bullpups running game just kept hammering away as Matt Ramey dashed in from 43 yards out before Jonah Clarke barreled in from three yards and Jakob Feil scored his second touchdown of the evening when he found the end zone from 14 yards out. With Drew Schrader adding three more extra point kicks the Bullpups went into the halftime break with a commanding 49-0 advantage on the scoreboard.

While neither team put points on the board in the third quarter, McPherson added two more scores in the fourth when talented sophomore backup Anthony Brooks found the end zone twice on runs of 13 and 18 yards. Schrader kept perfect on the night and the Bullpups earned their 63-7 win after Abilene connected on a late 68-yard pass play for their only score of the game.

While the Abilene stat sheet showed 125 yards in offense, those yards came on 49 offensive plays with 68 being on that late game touchdown pass. The ultra-stingy Bullpup defense held the Cowboys to just two yards rushing on 30 attempts.

As for the Bullpup offense, they only rolled up a modest 320 yards on 36 offensive plays, with 217 of those yards coming with the running attack which ran the ball 25 times in the game. Three McPherson quarterbacks combined to go seven of eleven for another 103 yards.

Kaleb Hoppes led those quarterbacks by connecting on three of four passes for 74 yards and the one score, while Dylan Rinker hit three of six for another 20 and freshman Hunter Alvord made his varsity debut by connecting on his only throw of the game for nine yards to Eli Pyle.

Jakob Feil led the Bullpup running attack by covering 95 yards on just eight carries while Matt Ramey ran for 58 on just two totes of the ball with one of those being his 43-scoring run. Anthony Brooks scored his two fourth quarter touchdowns during his seven carries for 50 yards.

Trey Buckbee was the top receiver on the night as he hauled in three passes for 51 yards.
