MCPHERSON – The normally high-octane McPherson offense only needed two touchdowns to score a 26-6 sectional playoff championship victory at home on Friday against Arkansas City.

With the win, the Bullpups remain unbeaten in 11 games and will now advance to the state Class 4A semi-finals next Friday when they will host Andover Central. Andover Central will come into the game with a 10-1 record after winning their playoff sectional game 31-14 over Buhler.

Without scoring but two touchdowns how did the Bullpups still put 26 points on the board?

By making use of the AVCTL Most Valuable Soccer Player, Drew Schrader, who doubles as the Bullpup kicker and connected on four fields goals against the Bulldogs on Friday, from 26, 36, 22 and 25 yards out. When you add in his two extra-point kicks, Schrader lead the Bullpups in scoring for the night with 14 points.

The only two touchdowns scored by McPherson on the night came in the third quarter when Bullpup quarterback Kaleb Hoppes connected with tight end Cody Stufflebean for a 20-yard score and then Jakob Feil dove in from 1-yard out in the fourth stanza.

An impressive 130 evenly divided plays were snapped on offense in the game with the visiting Bulldogs taking 66 offensive snaps and picking up 274 yards while the Bullpups only snapped the ball 64 times for 237 yards of offense.

Arkansas City stayed in the game by their aerial game as they completed 18 of 32 passes for 223 yards but were unable to get any into the end zone while being intercepted twice by the Bullpups Brycen Labertew. The Bulldogs had difficult time getting their running game rolling as McPherson held them to just 51 yards on the ground off 26 carries.

The Bullpups Kaleb Hoppes was only able to complete 11 of 23 passes for just 110 yards while the team ran for another 127 yards on 33 carries, with Jakob Feil getting the majority of those with 96 yards on 22 totes of the pigskin.           Trey Buckbee and Aaron Powell were Hoppes favorite targets in the pass game as Buckbee hauled in three passes for 41 yards while Powell had four receptions for 27.

Tyson Gottwald led the defense with six tackles while Jayton Alexander had five tackles and another six assists and linebacker Mason Thrash had three stops, four assists and one tackle for a loss of yardage.
