MCPHERSON – The McPherson Middle School 8th grade girls’ basketball team opened their 2019-20 season on Monday with a resounding 48-21 home victory over Sunrise Christian.

“This was a great start for our ladies,” said Head Coach TJ Jackson. “We got to play against a couple very talented athletes, and it showed us we need to be faster in our help defense. They were not as well rounded, so we will need to play more quickly on defense, but tonight we adjusted well and really made it hard for them to score as the game went along.”

Karter Alvord led the Lady Junior Pups with 14 points while Kaya Lowery had 8 and Bentley Smith scored 6.

“I was most proud of the fact that no matter who we had in the game we were able to run through some of our offensive sets, we hustled, and when we coached them up they improved for the most part,” noted Coach Jackson.

Coach Jackson concluded his post-game reflections by adding, “Offensively I would love to see a couple more girls be aggressive to the hoops. We have a very athletic group and if they drive to the hoop, I am betting on them winning those battles more often than not. We hesitated in some places, but first game feelings will be smoothed out as we play more. I am excited to see how quickly we learn from today.”

The 8th grade Junior Lady Pups have no time to rest as they are back on the court on Tuesday when they play on the road at Newton Chisholm.

8TH GRADE LADY PUPS SCORING (Team won 48-21): Karter Alvord 14; Kaya Lowery 8; Jaya McLeod 6; Bentley Smith 4; Kyndall Sandbo 4; Reanna Eilrich 4; Eve Malm 3; Madi Moors 2; Alex Romero 1.
