NEWTON – Partial success was found on the road for the McPherson Middle School seventh-grade girls basketball teams as they opened their 2019-20 season with a road trip to Newton on Tuesday and split a pair of games with Newton Chisholm.

The seventh-grade Junior Lady Pups ‘A’ team lost their season opener by a dozen, 32-20, under the new leadership of Head Coach Melissa Wade. Cora Pavlovich and Izabel Backhus led the team in scoring with eight and five points respectively.

“Overall, we did not get the win that we would have hoped for although the girls did great things to get the score that we earned,” explained Coach Wade. “We had open shots that were inches from sinking in, resulting in our fall. The girls hustled and gave effort the entire game, even when they were tired. We have some things to refine in practice, but I am proud of their effort and attitude.”

It was a season opening win for the seventh-grade Junior Lady Pups ‘B’ team as they doubled up Newton Chisholm with an 18-9 victory. Reese Buchman led the team in the scorebook with five points while Josie Fitzmorris had four.

“With a group this size, the girls had a lot of playing time and took advantage of the opportunity,” noted Coach Wade as she concluded her post-game reflections. “Even when tired, they played great defense and constantly hustled. I’m proud of their effort and attitude as well.”

Next up for the seventh-grade Junior Lady Pups will be next Monday when they play host to Salina South.
