SALINA – Despite playing a pair of road games in Salina on Saturday, the McPherson Middle School eighth-grade girls basketball team split their two games with Hays who also traveled to Salina.

In the ‘A’ game, the Junior Lady Pups scored a convincing 45-19 victory as Karter Alvord knocked down 16 points in the game while Kaya Lowery also hit double digits with 14.

“The girls had a nice win over Hays,” noted Coach Ellie Wingert. “We got into foul trouble right from the start, but that challenged the girls to move their feet more on defense. We did a better job rebounding tonight, and the ladies did a nice job of driving to the hoop.”

With a large victory and eight players putting at least a point in the scorebook, Coach Wingert added, “Again, we were able to get some girls in that typically play ‘B’ team, and they were very solid on defense. They played aggressive on both sides of the ball and I was proud of the effort from every player!”

Unfortunately, the eighth-grade Junior Lady Pups ‘B’ team did have the same fortune as they stumbled to a 30-19 loss to Hays. Gabriele Mason and Kaya Lowery led the team in scoring with seven and six points respectively.

“Although we didn’t get the outcome we wanted, these girls fought hard the entire game,” said Coach Wingert. “Because of injuries, the girls had a lot of playing time, and they continued to show hustle the entire game. We struggled with passing the ball and running our plays tonight, but the effort they continued to show even when they were down, was encouraging. Tonight, gave us a lot to work on and I’m excited to grow from here.”

The eighth-grade Junior Lady Pups will have one more game before the Thanksgiving break and that will be on Monday when they play host to Salina South.
