SALINA – Despite getting some coach praises for solid defensive play, the McPherson Middle School seventh-grade girls basketball teams could only split a pair of games with Hays on Saturday.

A slow start hampered the seventh-grade Junior Lady Pups ‘A’ team as they found themselves on the losing end of a 31-15 score. Addie Harlin was the leading scorer for McPherson with five points while Cora Pavlovich was the only other one who scored more than a bucket as she had four points.

“The girls started off rough,” noted Head Coach Melissa Wade. “They were rushing through and not finishing plays, plus turnovers were a problem the first half. The girls came out after halftime and only allowed seven points to be put up in the second half of the game. They played great all around and ran their plays to completion. Their perseverance was great to see.”

Coming out strong from the opening tip was key for the Junior Lady Pups ‘B’ team as they scored a 33-22 victory over Hays. No individual scoring as available.

Coach Wade concluded her post-game reflections by discussing the output of the ‘B’ team, saying, “The girls came out putting up a great number of points in the first half while holding Hays to just nine points. Hays pressed us hard and the girls were successful in breaking the press. The second half we got into foul trouble but kept playing our game.”

The 7th grade Junior Lady Pups will be back on the court on Monday when they play host to Salina South.
