MCPHERSON – It was a heartbreaking pair of losses by the McPherson Middle School seventh-grade girls basketball teams at home on Monday when they both lost by one point to Salina South.

In the ‘A’ game, the seventh-grade Junior Lady Pups dropped a 20-19 score to Salina South despite a solid day by Izabel Backhus who hit double digits with 13 points.

“The girls came out in the first half on fire,” noted Head Coach Melissa Wade in her post-game reflections. “They scored eight points and held Salina South to just four. We continued to play strong through the second half but fell just short of the win by a point. They ran their plays, played tough defense and fought from start to finish.”

Once again in the Junior Lady Pups ‘B’ game, Salina South pulled out a one point, 24-23 victory. Josie Fitzmorris led McPherson with 10 points.

“The teams were pretty evenly matched at the beginning of the game,” said Coach Wade. “At the half, Salina South was ahead of us by just four points and the girls came out and tied the game in the third quarter. With less than a minute left in the game, we had an opportunity for two free throws, one was made and put us ahead by one point. With only three seconds left on the clock, Salina South received the ball under the basket and made the shot to give them the win. The girls played a hard-fought game. They came out, broke the press, played tough defense and did not stop until the game was over.”

After taking a week break for Thanksgiving, the seventh-grade Junior Lady Pups will return to the hard court on Monday, December 2, when they make a trip to Hesston.

7TH GRADE JUNIOR LADY PUPS ‘A’ TEAM SCORING: Izabel Backhus – 13; Ellie Bower – 3; Addie Harlin – 3.

7TH GRADE JUNIOR LADY PUPS ‘B’ TEAM SCORING: Josie Fitzmorris – 10; Reese Buchman – 5; Ellie Bower – 4; Kenzie Kaufman – 2; Ariahanna Koehn – 2.
