SALINA – The McPherson Middle School seventh-grade boys basketball teams took a trip to Salina South on Monday and came home after being victorious visitors with two commanding wins over Salina South.

In the seventh grade ‘A’ team, the Junior Pups scored a 48-31 victory thanks to a three headed offensive monster as Gabe Pyle, Hayden Hoxie, and Bishop Brown each scored in double digits with 14, 13, and 12 points respectively. The win moves the Junior Pup ‘A’ team to 2-0 for the season.

“The ‘A’ team came out ready to go again tonight,” noted Head Coach Tyler Brown. “They opened the game with a 15-point quarter as Hayden Hoxie was lights out again from behind the arc with two three-pointers in the first quarter before adding another in the second quarter. But it wasn’t all about the offense as our defense was on lock down in the first quarter as well holding Salina South to just five points.”

Coach Brown continued his post-game reflections by adding, “We upped our offense even more in the second quarter by scoring 16 more points and having everyone finding their rhythm with six players six players getting into the box score. Gabe (Pyle), Hayden (Hoxie), Bishop (Brown), Carter (Allen), Ian (Razak), and Brody (Seidl) all found a way to make an impact offensively. Gabe really imposed his will on South in the third quarter when he scored nine of his 14 points. We fell just a quarter short of winning all four quarters only scoring four points in the fourth quarter while Salina South had nine. Overall, we seem to be playing team basketball and moving the ball around pretty well. We were a bucket short of holding another team to points in the 20’s, but to only allow 31 points is pretty good for a middle school game.”

The Junior Pup ‘B’ team earned their first victory of the season by scoring a 36-16 win over Salina South. Brenden Doile had a spectacular day in scoring 16 while Brody Seidl joined him in double digits with 10.

“The ‘B’ team also came out to play tonight,” said Coach Brown. “Brody (Seidl) with 10, Brenden (Doile) with 16 and Alex (Harms) with seven while only playing one-half to three-quarters of the game really had their way in the ‘B’ game. With them scoring 33 points in limited minutes, that is exactly what we needed from them.”

Coach Brown concluded his reflections by saying, “They were ready to go as they put up 14 points in the first quarter while limiting Salina South to just a pair of points. The second quarter was a defensive battle with the two teams scoring just eight points between them, we had three and South had five. But we regrouped nicely in the third quarter as Brenden and Brody were back at it again helping the team have another 14-point quarter while once again limiting South to just five points. Finally, to end the game it was all about the defense again in holding them to just four more points.”

The seventh-grade Junior Pups will take the rest of the week off for the Thanksgiving break before returning to the hardwood on Monday, December 2 with a home battle against Hesston.
