SENIOR LOADED ROSTER LEADS CANTON/GALVA LADIES!

CANTON – With a first-time basketball coach on the sidelines in 2018-19, the Canton/Galva girls’ basketball team still managed to finish with a 14-6 record for the season with a under classman dominate team.

As the Lady Eagles prepare for the upcoming 2019-20 season with a senior loaded squad filled with nearly every scorer from the previous season, Head Coach Shelby Hoppes is looking for chemistry with the now senior dominate team to take a step to the next level and aim for a trip to the state tournament in March.

Here is our look ahead for the 2019-20 Canton/Galva Lady Eagle basketball program:

WHO DOES NOT RETURN THIS SEASON?

WHO DOES RETURN?

  • Starter – Tia Moddelmog, a five-foot-seven senior who averaged 13.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.
  • Starter – Alexa Bell, a five-foot-seven junior who averaged 17.0 points per game.
  • Starter – Jayci Mastre, a five-foot-four senior who averaged 5.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game.
  • Starter – Braylee Doughman, a five-foot-eight senior who averaged 4.0 rebounds per game.
  • Letter Winner – Carissa Klatt, a five-foot-five senior.

WHAT DOES COACH SHELBY HOPPES BRING TO THE BENCH?

  • Coach Hoppes will be helped on the sideline by assistant coach Barry Fritz.
  • Coach Hoppes will be in just his second season ever as a head basketball coach, both with Canton/Galva.
  • Coach Hoppes led the Lady Eagles to a 14-6 record in 2018-19.
  • The Lady Eagles finished last season with a loss to Sterling in the state sub-state semi-finals.

WHAT COACH SHELBY HOPPES SAYS ABOUT THE UPCOMING 2019-20 LADY EAGLE SEASON?

  • Looking back at the 2018-19 season Coach Hoppes noted, “We had a very successful year last season in what was my first year coaching high school basketball.”
  • When asked about the potential of the 2019-20 season, Coach Hoppes said, “We return virtually all of the scoring from last year’s team led by seniors Tia Moddelmog, Jayci Mastre and Braylee Doughman along with junior Alexa Bell, all of whom combined to averaged 35 points and 19 rebounds per game last season. That point alone gives us confidence to take that scoring to the next level.”
  • Who will the coaching staff be counting on in 2019-20, Coach Hoppes concluded by saying, “We will have a big senior class this season, which will bring leadership and experience, all of which hopefully will turn into another strong and more successful season.”

WHEN DOES THE SEASON BEGIN?

  • The Canton/Galva Lady Eagles will hit the hardwood for the first time in the 2019-20 season on Friday, December 6, when they go on the road to White City, Kansas to tangle with Rural Vista.
