MCPHERSON – Playing for the first time in the newly renovated McPherson Community Building was exciting for the McPherson Middle School eighth-grade boys’ basketball teams and they showed their appreciation to the home crowd by sweeping visiting Hesston twice 56-20 and 53-31.

With the wins the 8th grade Junior Pups ‘A’ team is now 4-0 for the season while the ‘B’ team upped its record to 3-1.

Next up for the eighth-grade Junior Pups will be on Thursday, December 5 when they will play host to Salina Lakewood.

The eighth-grade Junior Pups ‘A’ team hammered the visiting team from Hesston in scoring a decisive 36-point victory, 56-20.

Kreighton Kanitz and Cory Muehler each had strong games by both putting 12 points by their name in the scorebook. Eight different players scored in the game for the Junior Pups.

“We got to play at the community building for the first time and our players were very excited to play there,” explained Head Coach Jay Crawford. “The team got off to a very good start by ending the first quarter with a commanding 23-4 advantage. Our defense was really active, and I have been putting Javyn (Alexander) on the other teams point guard and he really did make it difficult for Hesston to get into their offense. This allowed other players to get into passing lanes and it allowed us to get out on the fast break for some easy baskets.”

Coach Crawford concluded his post-game reflections by saying, “Players are starting to see that if we play defense the right way, then we can be really good. Our defensive sets are getting better, but we can run them better and we will. The effort on both teams was really good and that made us proud as coaches.”

8th GRADE JUNIOR PUP ‘A’ TEAM SCORING (56 total points): Kreighton Kanitz – 12; Cory Muehler – 12; Gavin Wedel – 9; Javyn Alexander – 8; Owen Pyle – 6; Henry Boese – 4; Alex Robertson – 3; Kyden Thompson – 2.

In the Junior Pup ‘B’ game the results were much the same as McPherson took care of Hesston with ease, 53-31.

Henry Boese had a monster day for the Junior Pups ‘B’ team by dropping in 17 points while Madden Luttig and Kyden Thompson chipped in with 11 and 10 points each.

“We did a great job delivering the initial blow to start off the game,” noted Coach Grant Barrett. “However, Hesston bounced back and was able to find some holes in our defense to keep it close at halftime. There was a point in the first half where we were able to get open in the paint but were just unable to finish. I told the guys at halftime that if we were able to make adjustments on those simple things, we’d be able to win by a double-digit margin.”

Coach Barrett continued by saying, “We were able to get some easy buckets from a couple of set plays and then managed to find mismatches in the second half that Hesston did not have an answer to. The improvements that these guys are making is starting to show. It’s good to see the guy’s playing to their strengths, knowing a teammate will have their back if anything goes wrong.”

8TH GRADE JUNIOR PUP ‘B’ TEAM SCORING (53 total points): Henry Boese – 17; Madden Luttig – 11; Kyden Thompson – 10; Leyton Witte – 8; Riley Newboles – 2; Jaiden Strickland – 2; Ryker Dossett – 1.
