MCPHERSON – The McPherson Middle School eighth-grade boys basketball teams rolled to a two-game sweep over Salina Lakewood at home on Thursday as the Junior Pup ‘A’ team remained unbeaten after five games and the ‘B’ team gets victory number four out of five.

The Junior Pup eighth grade ‘A’ team scored a 22-point, 55-33 victory over Salina Lakewood behind a strong game from Kreighton Kanitz and Alex Robertson who led the team in scoring with 18 and 12 points each. As a team the ‘A’ crew dropped in seven three-pointers, including four by Robertson while Kanitz kept Lakewood busy by his constant attacking the basket in the paint.

“Our team played in a really physical game and I was proud of the fact that they did not back down,” pointed out Head Coach Jay Crawford. “In the first half, even though we were ahead 29-18, we felt they got a lot of their points in transition because we were not were not able to stop the ball. So, we talked at the halftime break about locating the ball and containing it and getting it out of the middle of the court.”

Coach Crawford concluded his post-game reflections by adding, “We made seven three-point shots and our guards know they have the green light to shoot them. Alex (Robertson) hit four, Owen (Pyle) had a pair and Cory (Muehler) connected on one. Kreighton (Kanitz) really attacked the paint and if he would attack on the catch, it is really hard for guys to keep him out of the paint. We still need to work on our dribble, drive offense and get the ball downhill and reading each other better.”

8th GRADE JUNIOR PUP ‘A’ TEAM SCORING (55 total points): Kreighton Kanitz – 18; Alex Robertson – 12; Owen Pyle – 8; Cory Muehler – 5; Javyn Alexander – 4; Gavin Wedel – 4; Kyden Thompson – 2; Henry Boese – 2.

In the ‘B’ game, the Junior Pups moved their season mark to 4-1 with a 39-28 win over Salina Lakewood. Eight players put points in the scorebook with Gavin Wedel hitting for double digits with 13 while Alex Robertson almost got double digits for the second time in the day when he scored nine.

“We did a great job of pressuring them from the start,” explained ‘B’ team Coach Grant Barrett in his post-game reflections. “It seemed to help being back on our home court and seeing shots go in just like we practiced the day before. Coach Crawford and I are big on having a good practice before a game and yesterday the boys came to practice focused knowing that if we executed our sets and play Bullpup basketball, we would be able to come out on top today like we did.”

8th GRADE JUNIOR PUP ‘B’ TEAM SCORING (39 total points): Gavin Wedel – 13; Alex Robertson – 9; Owen Fetsch – 6; Kyde Thompson – 4; Riley Newboles – 2; Madden Luttig – 2; Noah Wilgers – 2; Jaiden Strickland – 1.

The Junior Pup eighth-grade teams will now be off for 10 days before returning to the competitive hardwood on Monday, December 16 when they travel to Hutchinson.
