SALINA – The trip north to Salina was a success for the McPherson Middle School seventh-grade girls basketball teams as both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams came home with victories over host Salina Lakewood on Thursday.

The seventh-grade Junior Lady Pups ‘A’ team scored a 20-point, 36-16 win while the ‘B’ team scrapped by with a three-point 30-17 victory.

Next battle up for the seventh grade Junior Lady Pups will be on Monday, December 9, when they travel south to tangle with Maize South.

A brief look at both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ games:

In The ‘A’ team battle, battled back from a horrific first quarter where they only scored two points to score a convincing 20-point, 36-16 victory over Salina Lakewood.

It was a team win as eight Junior Lady Pups put points in the scorebook, led by Cora Pavlovich with 10 and Josie Fitzmorris with nine, while others contributed under the basket with several getting five or more rebounds.

“We worked on some specific things in practice that helped us get the win against what we believed would be great competition,” explained Head Coach Melissa Wade. “The girls came out and did a wonderful job of executing what we practiced. We came into the game knowing exactly what we were going to focus on and do.”

Talking the complete team effort, Coach Wade concluded her ‘A’ game reflections by saying, “We were down in the first quarter when we scored only two points. We came out the second quarter and put up nine more while holding Salina Lakewood to only two points, then after a halftime talk, we dominated on offense. Rebounds in the game were amazing as we were boxing people out to get the ball back and many of the girls had five or more rebounds to help us keep the ball. I am proud of the girl’s hard work, they showed what toughness looks like on the court while showing effort, enthusiasm and execution.”

7th GRADE JUNIOR LADY PUPS ‘A’ TEAM SCORING (36 total points): Cora Pavlovich – 10; Josie Fitzmorris – 9; Addie Harlin – 6; Izabel Backhus – 4; Kenzi Kaufman – 2; Ellie Bower – 2; Mallorie Cooper – 2; Arihanna Koehn – 1.

It was a much tighter game in the Junior Lady Pups ‘B’ battle as McPherson scrapped through with a three-point, 30-27 victory over Salina Lakewood.

While the girls struggled in the first half and trailed by six, 23-17, going into the fourth quarter, the Junior Lady Pups bounced back and took the nail-biting victory in the end.

With seven Pups putting points on the scoreboard, only Addie Harlin reached double digits as she scored 11 while Josie Fitzmorris came close with eight.

According to Coach Wade, the ‘B’ team did struggle in the first half as she explained when she said, “Nerves were getting the best of us and we went into the halftime break down 17-11. After changing our plan at halftime, the girls came out and played great defense which resulted in a bit of foul trouble. All six of Salina Lakewood’s third quarter points came from free throws. At the end of the third quarter we trailed 23-17 which made the fourth quarter a nail biter. The girls came out and closed the gap to one point and then continued the back and forth the entire final quarter before we got the victory.”

Coach Wade concluded her ‘B’ game reflections by adding, “The girls were rebounding the ball and putting up baskets all while Lakewood was fouling us which resulted in the opportunity to shoot free throws. Despite the rough start and foul troubles, the girl’s effort, enthusiasm and execution were great. They showed toughness throughout the entire game. I’m proud of their perseverance and hard work.”

7th GRADE JUNIOR LADY PUPS ‘B’ TEAM SCORING (30 total points): Addie Harlin – 11; Josie Fitzmorris – 8; Izabel Backhus – 5; Arihanna Koehn – 2; Mallorie Cooper – 2; Kenzi Kaufman – 1; Adalyn Herrera – 1.
