MCPHERSON – It was another big win for the McPherson Middle School seventh-grade Junior Pup boys basketball ‘A’ team on Thursday as they stayed unbeaten at 4-0 with a 21-point victory over Salina Lakewood, while the seventh grade ‘B’ team dropped a 54-32 game.

7TH GRADE JUNIOR PUP ‘A’ TEAM WINS 41-20

Gabe Pyle had a monster game for the seventh-grade Junior Pups ‘A’ team in their 21-point victory by dropping in 19 points, while Hayden Hoxie chipped in with 14.

“I felt we came out almost to ramped up tonight,” noted seventh-grade Junior Pup Head Coach Tyler Brown during his post-game reflections. “We just were not in sync with our play but after an early timeout we settled down and started to play Bullpup basketball. Our defense cranked it up after giving up eight points in the first quarter as we held Salina Lakewood to just five in the second quarter, three in the third and only four more in the fourth quarter.”

Coach Brown concluded his reflections by talking about the two big games by Gabe Pyle and Hayden Hoxie, saying, “Gabe (Pyle) and Hayden (Hoxie) were on a mission working back cuts all night long. Gabe had a huge 13 point second quarter to break the game open as we scored 17 as a team in the quarter. Our next game won’t be until the 16th and we will play Hutchinson, they are a very good team and I’m predicting it will be one of our tougher challenges of the season.”

7th GRADE JUNIOR PUPS ‘A’ TEAM SCORING (41 total points): Gabe Pyle – 19; Hayden Hoxie – 14; Brenden Doile – 3; Bishop Brown – 2; Ian Razak – 2; Carter Allen – 1.

7th GRADE JUNIOR PUP ‘B’ TEAM LOSES BY 22

It was a rough night for the seventh-grade Junior Pup ‘B’ team as they lost by 22 points, 54-32, to Salina Lakewood, dropping their season mark to 1-2.

Only three Junior Pups puts points in the scorebook, but 18 of those came from Brenden Doile while Alex Harms scored in double digits as well with 10.

“I feel like the ‘B’ team is giving the effort, but they just need more time to learn the playbook and need more time to work on their fundamentals,” explained Coach Brown. “Brenden (Doile) helped keep the team close in the first quarter as he scored seven of his eighteen in the first period. To be down 13-9 after the first, we were still within striking distance. Brenden gave us a spark offensively, although we missed his defensive presence in the second quarter with him having to sit out. We gave up 14 points to Lakewood because he sat out after already playing three quarters of the ‘A’ game. Alec (Harms) tried to fill in the void by adding 10 points, but we just need a few more guys to be able to make an impact on the game if this ‘B’ team is going to find the ‘W’ column in the future.”

As Coach Brown mentioned in his post-game reflections, the seventh-grade Junior Pups now have a good 10 days off before taking the competitive court again at Hutchinson on Monday, December 16.

7th GRADE JUNIOR PUPS ‘B’ TEAM SCORING (32 total points): Brenden Doile – 18; Alec Harms – 10; Jackson Malvo – 4.
