MAIZE – It was a rough road trip for the McPherson Middle School eighth-grade girls basketball teams on Monday as they went south to Maize and came home empty handed with two losses to Maize South.

Brief write about both the ‘A’ team’s 35-26 loss and the ‘B’ team’s 31-18 defeat:

8th GRADE JUNIOR LADY PUP ‘A’ TEAM PLAY TOUGH BUT LOSE:

Despite some gritty work by the eighth-grade Junior Lady Pups ‘A’ team, they could not bring home a victory on Monday as they lost by nine, 35-26, on the road to Maize South.

Karter Alvord was the lone major offensive weapon for the Junior Lady Pups as she scored more than half the team points by dropping in 15 by her name in the scorebook.

“Losing is obviously never fun and it shouldn’t be because these girls have worked hard,” noted eighth-grade Junior Lady Pup Head Coach TJ Jackson. “There’s still more in their tank and I need to make sure we are prepared better for a bigger post like we played tonight. I need to make sure our expectations continue to increase as we go through the season.”

Coach Jackson concluded his reflections by saying, “Defensively we can be faster to on ball pressure, and at the posts we will be stronger with defense to not let them get some easy buckets. Offensively, I hope to help the girls improve their finishing at the hoop plus our ability to get started scoring a little quicker. The ladies will come back better because of this and I am confident that the Hutchinson game next Monday will look far different. These ladies won’t settle for this type of game again.”

8th GRADE JUNIOR LADY PUP ‘B’ TEAM LET GAME SLIP AWAY IN SECOND HALF:

After being tied at the halftime break, the eighth-grade Junior Lady Pups ‘B’ team let the game slip through their fingers as they came up short in a 31-18 defeat at the hands of Maize South.

No players reached double digits as only four Junior Lady Pups put points in the scorebook, led by Jaya McLeod and Kyndall Sandbo who each scored six.

According to ‘B’ team Coach Ellie Wingert in her post-game reflections, “The first half was a very even game and we even went into the halftime break tied. After the break, we started making some bad passes and this gave Maize South a lead. We struggled getting into our offense tonight, because of these bad passes. I’m excited to have a full week of practice coming up so we can improve upon these mistakes. This game gave us a lot to work on, and I’m excited to continue to see this group grow.”

WHAT’S UP NEXT FOR THE 8TH GRADE JUNIOR LADY PUPS?

The eighth-grade Junior Lady Pups are now off for a week of practice before returning to the hardwood on Monday, December 16 when they will play host to Hutchinson.

8th GRADE JUNIOR LADY PUPS ‘A’ TEAM SCORING (26 total points): Karter Alvord – 15; Reanna Eilrich – 6; Alex Romero – 3; Kaya Lowery – 2.

8TH GRADE JUNIOR LADY PUPS ‘B’ TEAM SCORING (18 total points): Jaya McLeod – 6; Kyndall Sandbo – 6; Gabriele Mason – 4; Bentley Smith – 2.
