MCPHERSON – In a busy evening of double duals, the McPherson High wrestling team managed to crush both Chapman and Smoky Valley, while Smoky Valley was able to put the hammer on Chapman.

The Bullpups began the evening with a 71-9 domination of Chapman in which McPherson only lost two matches. In their second meet of the evening, the Bullpups repeated the effort with a 66-15 handling of Smoky Valley.

Smoky Valley won their battle with Chapman 40-11.

One note to understand, Chapman had eight weight classes in both their matches.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR SMOKY VALLEY AND MCPHERSON?

The Vikings will be back on the competitive mats on Saturday when they travel north to battle with Clay Center.

For the Bullpups, they turn around an head to Colby on Friday and Saturday to wrestle in the Colby Invitational.

A summary of the three battles on the mat:

BULLPUPS MANHANDLE CHAPMAN

PIC--BULLPUP WRESTLING - 1

It helped the Bullpups when the first five weights all won by forfeit due to Chapman did not have a wrestler to put on the mat. In fact, eight of the fourteen weights were scored as a forfeit in favor of the Bullpups and they used that to propel them to their 71-9 victory.

Of the six matches that did go to the mat, Landon Crews at 138, Devin Frantz at 160 and Jonah Scott at 285 all won by a fall, while Landon Frantz scored a decision victory. Nate Rogers at 152 lost by a fall while in what may have been the best match of the entire evening, Mason Thrash at 220 lost a close decision to Zach Ferris. It would not be surprising to see both Thrash and Ferris going for medals at the end of the season.

MCPHERSON DOMINATES SMOKY VALLEY

In a match of cross county schools, the Bullpups dominated the Vikings by a 66-15 score. The Vikings left six weight open which led to forfeit victories for the Bullpups.

Of the three victories by Smoky Valley, two came by a fall with Justice Gardner pinning Jase Anderson at 126 and Austin Sharp took down Nate Rogers at 152, while their third win came on a nail-biting close 3-2 decision by Dax Hopp over the Bullpups Kourtney Craig at 182.

“I was pleased with our effort,” noted Viking Head Coach Ben Elliott. I thought the young kids got better. I thought our upperclassmen battled hard against some good competition. McPherson has a good team from top to bottom and should be competitive at the end of the season. Chapman’s Zach Ferris looks capable of hitting the podium again this year as he had a really good win over a very tough opponent in Mason Thrash of McPherson.”

The five fall victories for McPherson came from Lorenzo Cruzen at 120 Devon VanFossen, Rhett Edmonson at 145 over Bronson Golden, Devin Frantz at 160 over Richard Zeller, Landon Frantz at 195 over Tanner Luttig, and Mason Thrash at 220 over Leroy Bean.

SMOKY VALLEY BEATS CHAPMAN WITH FOUR WINS

VIKINGS - WRESTLING

It seems impossible that a team could win a wrestling match while winning just four weights, but that is exactly what Smoky Valley did to Chapman because of the fact that Chapman forfeited in eight weights.

In the four wins for the Vikings, one came on points as Austin Sharp took a 10-0 decision at 152 while Bronson Golden at 145, Richard Zeller at 160 and Tanner Luttig at 195 all took victories by a fall.
