CANTON – It was a battle of the two Junior Eagles on Thursday in Canton as the Canton/Galva Junior High boys basketball team took to the court against the Elyria Christian Junior High boys team and the Junior Eagles of Canton/Galva scored a victory in the ‘A’ game, but then lost twice to the Elyria Christian Junior Eagles in the ‘B’ and ‘C’ games.

In the ‘A’ game, Canton/Galva survived an Elyria run at the beginning and end of the game to hold on for a 15-point, 48-33 win.

Elyria Christian proved the better team on the court for the day in the ‘B’ game as they scored an 11-point, 32-21 victory over the Canton/Galva Junior Eagles. Dominic Dosset hit for double digits for the Elyria Junior Eagles with 10 points.

In a very low scoring ‘C’ game, Elyria Christian came out the winner by a pair of points at 12-10.

NEXT UP for the Canton/Galva Junior Eagles will be a home game with Peabody/Burns on Thursday, December 19, before heading into the Christmas break, while the Elyria Christian Junior Eagles will host Centre on Thursday, December 19, in their final game before the break.

Highlights, stats and coach reflections from the ‘A’ game:

In the ‘A’ game, Canton/Galva held a slim three-point, 15-12 despite an early Elyria eight-point lead, advantage at the end of the first quarter before shutting down the Elyria offense in the second stanza and holding them to just four points while scoring 14 to take a more commanding 13-point, 29-16, lead going into the halftime break.

Canton/Galva stretched the lead out to 22 points at the end of the third quarter at 45-23 before Elyria made a valiant but late comeback in the final quarter to close the final gap to just 15 points and get the 48-33 victory.

The Canton/Galva Junior Eagles were led by the three-headed offensive monster in Kaiden Wilson, Jaden Ediger and Jordan Duncan as they all scored in double digits with 15, 14, and 13 points respectively.

James Schott was the big gun for the Elyria Christian Junior Eagles as he dropped in 16 points while also pulling down four rebounds and taking five steals.

For DeAnn Huxman, the Elyria Head Coach, it went like she said, “Our intensity and effort were good in the first and fourth quarters, but I felt we let down in the second and third quarters which hurt us overall. I’m very proud of the boys for never giving up and fighting all the way to the end.”

“We knew Elyria was going to be one of the best teams in our league and that proved true when we got off to a rough start and they jumped out to an early lead,” explained Canton/Galva Head Coach Adam North in his post-game reflections. “I was glad to see us deal with early adversity and battle back to take the lead by the end of the first quarter and then extend it with good defense in the second and third quarters. It’s a credit to them that they made a run at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but we finally calmed down and slowed it down to ensure the win. I’m sure both teams learned a lot and will work to improve over the Christmas break.”
