GOESSEL – Due to winning the state championship in football, the Canton/Galva boys basketball team played their first three games without a whole lot of full team practice time, and they lost all three.

On Saturday, playing for fifth-place in the Bluebird Classic at Goessel, the Eagle boys finally showed their potential and did so in an explosive way as they dismantled Burrton from the opening tip to the final buzzer and scored their first win of the season in lopsided fashion, 72-35.

The Eagles took full command from the opening tip as they ran out to a 19-2 lead by the end of the first quarter and then added another 25 points in the second eight-minute period to go into halftime holding a 29-point advantage at 44-15. Doubling up what Burrton put on the scoreboard in the third quarter, Canton/Galva went into the final eight minutes of play holding a 38-point lead as they cruised to the final 72-35 victory.

“We really got them in an uncomfortable pace to start the game,” noted Eagle Head Coach Shane Duncan. “Once we started getting easy buckets off our defensive pressure, we gained a lot of confidence.”

As a team, the Eagles connected on 54% of their shots for the evening while holding Burrton to just 33%. The Eagle defense pushed Burrton into 24 turnovers while they only gave the ball up 11 times, and under the basket in the paint, the Eagles had a huge advantage with 39 compared to the nine by Burrton.

Individually, Tyson Struber had a monster game, getting a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds along with three steals. Joining Struber with double digits in the Eagle scorebook was Xavier Westbrook and Brayden Collins who scored 11 and 10 points respectively. Nine Eagles put points in the scorebook during the game. Collins also stole the ball four times and Andrew Prieb hauled down eight rebounds.

Coach Duncan concluded his post-game reflections by saying, “We had a significant size advantage tonight and were able to utilize it. We dominated the glass all night and didn’t give them second chance opportunities. It was nice to finally get our first win as the boys have been playing hard and deserved it.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE EAGLES?

Looking to extend the win streak, the 1-3 Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Lyons.
