GOESSEL – While they may have been playing for first place of the Bluebird Classic on Saturday, the Elyria Christian boys basketball team could not match up to the intensity played by host Goessel as the Eagles were defeated 47-27.

After being down by five at 14-9 by the end of the first quarter, Elyria bounced back and went on a 5-2 run at the beginning of the second quarter to pull within two at 16-14 before stumbling to a 25-18 disadvantage going into the halftime break.

Coming out of the break, Goessel upped their intensity level a notch and began to pull away, running out to a 17-point, 39-22, lead by the end of the third stanza and then adding to hit to reach the 20-point final margin of victory.

“Goessel played a solid game tonight and we were not able to match their intensity,” commented Elyria Christian Head Coach Zach Goodrich. “Give credit to Coach Guhr and his game plan, because we struggle in the first part of the game and in the second half as they slowed us down to our lowest half of the season.”

Talking more about how the game played out, Coach Goodrich continued by saying, “In the first half we were able to cut a large deficit to just two points after getting down early, but then struggled to keep it close after that. We went into halftime down by seven and felt we had some life, but Goessel came out strong and capitalized on some of our mistakes that led to them extending their lead. We ran our of gas in the second half and our shots were coming up short as we were unable to make another run.”

Bret Anderson led the Eagles in scoring with eight points despite being in foul trouble, while Zach Stucky, Josef Hobsen and Alec Huddle each chipped in with five.

Coach Goodrich closed out his post-game reflections by talking about the team itself, adding, “I do like the fight we showed after we got down. I believe we learned some important lessons in this championship game. We will be better as the season progresses and I truly like where we are going.”

As the loss dropped the Eagles to an even 2-2 for the season, they will look to get back into the winning column on Tuesday when they play host to WAHAA.
