GOESSEL – It was a banner day for the Canton/Galva basketball teams as the Lady Eagles joined the Eagle boys in not only winning a fifth-place game at the Bluebird Classic, but they also earned their first win of the young season.

While they did not demolish their opponent like the Eagle boys did, the Lady Eagles hung tough despite a night of poor shooting and pulled out a two-point, 43-41 victory over host Goessel. The win gives the Canton/Galva girls a 1-3 mark for the season.

Goessel jumped out to an eight-point, 13-5 lead by the end of the first quarter before the Lady Eagles got their offensive legs going in the second quarter by scoring 17 points and pulling to within three at 25-22 heading into the halftime break.

Canton/Galva chipped away another couple of points in the third quarter to head into the final eight minutes of play trailing by a single point at 31-30. With 13 final quarter points the Lady Eagles earned their first win of the season by the final two-point, 43-41 margin.

The victory came despite the Lady Eagles hitting just 19% of their shots from the field while Goessel was hitting 33%. One of the two major advantages in the game that the Lady Eagles had was at the free throw line where despite having a couple more personal fouls than Goessel, Canton/Galva shot and made nine more free throws than their opponent which proved out to be the difference in the game.

Inside the paint, the Lady Eagles held a big advantage as well with 36 rebounds compared to Goessel’s 23, including a 14-7 advantage on offensive or second chance rebounds. The Lady Eagle defensive also accounted for 13 steals.

Individually, Tia Moddelmog had another big night as she poured in 25 of the team’s 43 points while Carissa Klatt just missed joining her in double digits with nine. Moddelmog also led the team in steals with six while tieing for the team lead in rebounds along with Klatt and Maddi McHugh with six.

Now that they have their first win under their belt, the Canton/Galva Lady Eagles will be looking for win number two next Tuesday when they travel west to tangle with Lyons.
