GOESSEL – While the Little River girls’ basketball team lost their first game of the season in the championship game of the Bluebird Classic in Goessel on Saturday, the Little River boys rode the hot shooting of Jayden Garrison to gain a victory to finish third.
HOW DID THE LADY REDSKINS DO?
Through the first two quarters of the girl’s championship game, the Lady Redskins played Central Christian close enough to only trail by three, 19-16, going into the halftime break.
Central Christian came out a put up 15 points in the third quarter while holding Little River to just seven and that made the difference even as the Lady Redskins outscored Central Christian by two point in the final eight minutes of play, the Lady Redskins ended up losing 47-40 to finish second in the Bluebird Classic.
“What a game,’’ noted Lady Redskin Head Coach Trey Look. “I couldn’t be more proud of the girl’s effort tonight against a good Central Christian team. I felt we executed our game plan for most of the game. A couple of plays here and there could have changed the game around. We had a minute or two in the third quarter that hurt us and gave them a ten-point lead that we could just never shrink down.”
The first loss of the season almost overshadowed a monster game by Lady Redskin Lily Boughfman as she had a double-double by scoring 19 points while pulling down 13 rebounds.
Coach Look concluded his post-game reflections by saying, “We had some girls put in quality minutes defensively that really limited some of their scorers. Defense doesn’t show up in the stat book but Leah (Ayers), Morgan (Konami) and Jaylie (Bergkamp) had an excellent game. It was a long week but even with this loss I feel that we gained some knowledge and in site on how we can really play when the girls put their minds to it. Now we rest and prepare for a big week of road games before the break.”
HOW DID THE REDSKIN BOYS DO?
After suffering their first loss of the season earlier in the week, the Redskin boys scored a 13-point, 50-39 win over Central Christian to earn a third-place trophy at the Bluebird Classic.
While Little River jumped out to a 12-point, 21-9, advantage after just the first eight minutes of play, Central Christian shaved a couple of points off the lead in the second quarter to leave Little River with only a ten-point, 36-26, lead heading into the halftime break.
Little River then pushed the lead out to 16 at 50-33 after three quarters of play before cruising in the fourth quarter and earning the victory.
Only four Redskins put points in the scorebook as they rode the hot shooting of junior Jayden Garrison who scored 29 points by making 12 of his 16 shot attempts from the field including a whopping five-of-seven from beyond the three-point line. Garrison’s hot shooting nearly overshadowed the big night the Redskins also got from Trey Rolfs as he scored a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Fab freshman Braxton Lafferty led Little River on the boards by pulling down 11 rebounds.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE REDSKINS?
After both Little River teams closed out their busy week, they both found themselves with identical 3-1 overall records for the season.
Both the Redskin boys and the Lady Redskins will have two big road battles ahead before getting into the long Holiday Break. First up will be a trip on Tuesday to Moundridge before closing out the week on the road at Rural Vista.
