MCPHERSON – It was a good way for the McPherson Middle School eighth-grade girls basketball teams to close out the first half of their 2019-20 season on Thursday by taking victories in both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ team games against Newton.

8TH GRADE JUNIOR LADY PUPS ‘A’ TEAM HAMMERS NEWTON!

The eighth-grade Junior Lady Pups ‘A’ team moved their season mark to a dazzling 9-1 by putting the hammer down on Newton, 43-25, to close out their pre-Christmas part of the schedule on Thursday. McPherson’s only loss at the moment came at the hands of a non-league opponent.

Leading the way for the Junior Lady Pups was Karter Alvord as she poured in 16 points for the day while Alex Romero also reached double digits with 10.

“Despite giving up 25 points this was our best defensive effort so far this season,” noted Head Coach TJ Jackson when talking about the defensive effort the Junior Lady Pups made. “Other than a moment or two we played unreal defense on ball and our help defense showed up in ways we haven’t seen yet. While Newton had a girl who was a great basketball player and she did get her points, but our girls were in her face, our posts did a great job helping when she drove to the basket, and our girls we had playing her one-on-one played lights out.”

Coach Jackson concluded his post-game reflections by talking the offense, saying, “Offensively, we ran our sets better than we have all year, moving the ball all the way through to help beat their zone, and when they switched to man our girls improvement in attacking and finishing either with a bucket or drawing a foul was evident. The girls three-point shooting is improving each week along with their confidence to take them. Our free throw shooting was

Better also. This was the best team ball we have played. Great way to go into the break, and I know the girls are looking to finish strong after some time off.”

8th GRADE JUNIOR LADY PUPS ‘B’ TEAM NIPS NEWTON BY TWO!

In a low scoring, tight ball game the eighth-grade Junior Lady Pups ‘B’ team scored a low scoring, two-point, 23-21 win over Newton on Thursday in the final game before the holiday break.

Only four Junior Lady Pups put points in the scorebook, led by Gabriele Mason with eight and Kyndall Sandbo who chipped in with seven.

“The girls played well tonight against Newton,” pointed out ‘B’ team Coach Ellie Wingert. “We got off to a slow start defensively after jumping out to a quick lead. There were moments where we were outmatched and outhustled in the first quarter, keeping the game pretty close. Once the girls settled in, our defense stepped up in big ways throughout the game to out-work Newton in each aspect of the game.”

Coach Wingert concluded her reflections by adding, “On the offensive end, I could not have asked more from our girls as they moved the ball around well and were not afraid to take an open look. It was fun to see the girls take their shots tonight when presented.”
