CANTON – While the first few weeks of the season have not been too kind to the Canton/Galva boys basketball team, they made sure going into the holiday break would be different as they hosted Herington on Friday and put the hammer on them with a 35-point, 60-25 victory.
The game started out rough as the Eagles found themselves down by two, 8-6, before closing out the first quarter on an 11-0 run and after that it was all Eagles.
Canton/Galva added another 20 points on the scoreboard in the second quarter to take a commanding 37-15 advantage heading to the halftime break. Coming out of the break the Eagles kept the foot on the offensive pedal and outscored Herington 23-10 in the final 16 minutes of play to gain their second win of the season with the 60-25 win.
Looking at the stat sheet, the Eagles had the advantage in everyone as they connected on 41% of their field goals while holding Herington’s offense to just 27% connection on theirs. Canton/Galva dropped in nine three-pointers, including five by Kinser Colgin, while Herington missed on all five of their attempts from behind the arc.
Where the Eagles really showed their domination in the game came inside the paint as they pulled down 43 total rebounds compared to Herington’s 18. The Eagles had three who grabbed at least six including Xavier Westbrook with 11, Tyson Struber with nine and Brayden Minson who had six.
Offensively, the Eagles counted 18 assists on their 24 made field goals.
Thanks to his five three-pointers, Kinser Colgin had an outstanding game by scoring 22 points total while Tyson Struber chipped in with 15 and just missed a double-double with those nine rebounds.
Eagle Head Coach Shane Duncan had a lot of praises to hand out during his post-game reflections when he said, “I felt our defensive pressure forced them into an uncomfortable pace as we had 20 points scored that came from their 21 turnovers. Kinser (Colgin) shot lights out tonight by hitting on eight-of-fifteen from the field and three-of-eight from beyond the three-point line. Brayden (Minson) had his best game of the season thus far with six rebounds, four assists and four steals while Tyson (Struber) did a great job of controlling the paint to the point that every time Herington made it into the lane he would make every shot extremely difficult. Very proud of the team’s effort and performance tonight. They deserved this win heading to the break.”
WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE EAGLES?
The Canton/Galva Eagles now go into the holiday break with a 2-4 record and a lot of momentum with the dominating victory. The Eagles will return to the competitive court on Tuesday, January 7 when they will play host to Centre.
