BOYS VICTORIOUS, GIRLS SUFFER LOSS!

HALSTEAD – It was definitely a tale of two games for the Smoky Valley boys’ and girls’ basketball teams on the road at Halstead in their final game before the holiday break as the Viking boys scored a big victory while the Lady Vikings suffered a loss.

The Viking boys scored a decisive second win of the season as they defeated the Dragons 40-27 while the Lady Vikings went through some major offensive struggles in losing to the state ranked Lady Dragons 45-24.

LADY VIKINGS STUMBLE ON OFFENSE

It seemed to be a struggle from the opening tip for the Lady Vikings as they scored but four points in the first quarter while Halstead put in 14 to take an early 10-point 14-10 lead. With both teams scoring seven in the second quarter it meant the Lady Dragons still held a 10-point advantage over the Lady Vikings heading into the halftime break at 21-11.

The offensive struggles continued in the second half as Smoky Valley was only able to score nine points in the third quarter and just four in the fourth as Halstead showed why they were state ranked as they pulled away for the 21-point, 45-24 victory.

Offensively, the Lady Vikings struggled throughout the game trying to break the pressure defense played by Halstead and lead by their six-foot junior all-state mention, Karina Gerber.

Claire Broxterman and Breanna Priddy led the Lady Vikings on offense with six points each.

Smoky Valley Head Coach Larry Van Der Wege was honest about the game performance during his post-game reflections when he said, “Tonight was our worst performant of the young season and part of that was us and a big part was state ranked Halstead. (Karina) Gerber is a handful as she can be a point guard or power forward all during the same possession. We didn’t get many clean looks tonight and struggled to put the ball in the basket. All in all, going into the Christmas break 2-3 is better than some expected, and we are just a few possessions of an even better record. The break will give us a chance to regroup and continue to improve our skills to be ready to take on the rest of the season.”

VIKING BOYS GET ANOTHER WIN

The Smoky Valley Viking boys team scored a big, 13-point, 40-27 victory over Halstead on Friday which gave them their second victory of the season and a 2-3 mark heading into the holiday break.

Unfortunately, there was no other information found available on the game at this point.
