LITTLE RIVER – Inconsistency cost the Little River girls basketball team on Friday as they kicked off their 2020 side of the season schedule losing to Sacred Heart at home on Friday, 44-36.

While neither team found a groove in the first quarter, Sacred Heart held Little River to just two points while only scoring eight by earning the six-point early lead. The Lady Redskins found their offense in the second quarter and poured in 16 points while holding the Lady Knights to just five, giving Little River a five-point, 18-13, advantage heading into the halftime break.

That inconsistency showed up again in the third quarter as the Lady Redskins were only able to score six points while Sacred Heart dropped 21 points through the basket to take a 10-point, 34-24 lead into the final quarter of play. Despite outscoring the visitors by a bucket, Little River was unable to chip away at the lead and suffered their fourth loss of the season, 44-36.

“I was proud of the girls tonight against a good Sacred Heart team,” noted Lady Redskin Head Coach Trey Look. “As you’ll see, we didn’t have the best shooting night and while we were able to get some inside shots early in the game, we just couldn’t finish and the third quarter plus turnovers was what really hurt us tonight.”

Talking about what to take away from the game, Coach Look concluded his post-game reflections by adding, “We have to do a better job of taking care of the ball or we will never win close games like these. I felt out intensity was pretty good tonight, maybe the best we’ve had all season. Even though we lost, I think we can build from of this and learn that we can play with good teams. We just need to be mentally tough to finish close games.”

For the Lady Redskins, Jaylie Bergkamp led the team in scoring with 12 while Lily Boughfam cam close to double digits with eight. Boughfman and Morgan Konen topped the team in the paint with nine and seven rebounds respectively, while Emma McBride led the defense by coming up with three steals.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE LADY REDSKINS?

With the loss, the Little River girls drop below .500 for the season at 3-4. They now prep for a tangle with Peabody/Burns on Tuesday, January 7.
