LITTLE RIVER – In a game plagued by fouls and turnovers, the Little River boys basketball team started the 2020 side of their schedule with a heartbreaking 62-59 home court loss to Sacred Heart in overtime on Friday.

A close game from the opening tip, Little River and Sacred Heart were tied at 15-15 at the end of the first quarter before the Redskins were able to get a slim three-point advantage at 30-27.

After Sacred Heart took a 38-37 lead by the end of the third quarter, both teams kept putting points on the board in the fourth quarter as 37 points went in the basket and Little River scored late to put the game into overtime. Unfortunately for the Redskins, Sacred Heart doubled them up on the scoring in the overtime to gain the three-point, 62-59 win.

The game was dominated by poor play on both sides as the two teams combined for 42 turnovers (Sacred Heart had 25 and Little River recorded 17) and a whopping 78 free throws due to 51 fouls being called in the game with Sacred Heart being tagged for 27 and the Redskins 24.

Fouls cost Little River by the end of the game as Jayden Garrison, Rylan Konen and Keaton Richardson all fouled out, while Braxton Lafferty was hampered in his play with four fouls.

Little River also suffered from poor shooting as they hit just two of 18 three-point attempts and 31% overall from the field.

Until fouling out, Jayden Garrison had his normally strong game by leading the Redskins on offense with 23 points while also making four steals and blocking three shots. Braxton Lafferty and Trey Rolfs also reached double digits in the scorebook with 12 and 11 points respectively.

The loss was only the second of the season for Little River as they are now 5-2 for the season. The Redskins are scheduled to be back in action on Tuesday, January 7, when they tangle with Peabody/Burns.
