HUTCHINSON – Shooting was the key on Friday as the Elyria Christian girls basketball team opened the 2020 end of their schedule with a road loss to Central Christian, 50-31.

While the Lady Eagles could only connect on 30% of their shots from the field in the game, the Lady Cougars blistered the nets by scoring on 73% of their attempts for the evening.

Central Christian jumped out to a 13-7 first quarter lead before extending it to 25-10 at the halftime break when Elyria Christian could only score three points in the second quarter.

The second half was much the same as the Lady Cougars dropped in 15 points in the third quarter while the Lady Eagles only scored six putting them behind 40-16 going into the fourth quarter.

“It was a tough night against a very good Central Christian team,” noted Lady Eagle Head Coach Greg Fields during his post-game reflections. “We slowly warmed up on offense as the night went on, but we did not play our typical aggressive defense. When seven girls play significant time without committing one foul and we give up fifty points, you know we should be able to pick up the intensity.”

Olivia Peters led the Lady Eagles in scoring with eight points while Kylee Penner and Ryland Hawkinson chipped in for seven and six respectively. Penner and Hawkinson held their ground under the basket by pulling down seven and six rebounds each, including four offensive clears for freshman Hawkinson.

“We definitely did learn from our mistakes today,” added Coach Fields as he concluded his comments. “I know the girls are ready to have some opportunities to get back in the gym against some league teams soon. As for individuals, Olivia (Peters) continues to give us some good scoring while Kylee (Penner) did a nice job of drawing fouls in the paint.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE LADY EAGLES?

The loss on Friday drops the Lady Eagles to 3-4 for the season as they prep to return to their home court on Tuesday, January 7 for a battle with Herington.
