SALINA – On Monday, the McPherson Middle School 7th grade boys’ basketball teams traveled to Salina to open the 2020 side of their schedule and scored a commanding victory in the ‘A’ game while losing in the ‘B’ game.

Once you got past the first quarter of the 7th grade Junior Pups ‘A’ game, it was all McPherson as they dominated Salina Lakewood in the final three quarters on their way to a 23-point, 51-28, victory.

The victory leaves the ‘A’ team unbeaten at 6-0 for the season.

With the score only 8-8 at the end of the first quarter, the Junior Pups scored 16 second quarter points while holding Lakewood to zero points in taking a commanding 24-8 advantage into the halftime break.

“With players not feeling their best I felt we had players step up to the challenge and Bishop Brown was one of them,” noted 7th grade Junior Pup Head Coach Tyler Brown. “Bishop (Brown) not only had six of our eight points in the first quarter, he delivered on another six in the second quarter and showed his physicality through the entire first half. He was able to score 12 of his 15 points in the first half and set the tone of how to attack the rim.”

While Bishop Brown led the team in scoring with his 15 points, he was not the only Junior Pup to reach double digits in the scorebook as Hayden Hoxie scored 12 and Gabe Pyle hit for 11.

“Once Bishop (Brown) set that tone of attacking the rim, others started to find their game as well,” added Coach Brown as he concluded his post-game reflections. “Hayden (Hoxie) and Gabe (Pyle) led the way in the second half. It was our defense that was lights out by not letting Lakewood score at all in the second quarter and that was the difference in the game.”

The ‘B’ game did not go as well for the Junior Pups as they dropped their season mark to just 1-4 with an eight-point, 34-26, loss to Lakewood.

Only four Junior Pups put points in the scorebook during the game as Jaxson Malvo hit double digits with 10 while Brenden Doile just missed by chipping in with nine.

“The ‘B’ team showed a lot of growth tonight in their loss after losing to Lakewood by 20 the first time we played them,” noted ‘B’ team Coach Paul Reichenberger. “The final score doesn’t show how close the game actually was though as it went back and forth the entire game. I thought Jaxson (Malvo) had his best game of the year tonight as he attacked the paint really well in the second half.”

Coach Reichenberger concluded his reflections by saying, “In conclusion, I think if we make our free throws down the stretch and limit our turnovers, we had a great chance at winning a close game. Overall, the boys completed really hard tonight and are showing improvement from the beginning of the season.”

Up next for the 7th grade Junior Pups will be a tangle with Salina South on Thursday on the Junior Pups home court.
