MASON, ALVORD TOP SCORING STATS!
MCPHERSON – It was a good start to the 2020 part of the schedule for the McPherson Middle School 8th grade girls’ basketball teams on Monday as both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams scored victories on the home court over Salina Lakewood.
‘A’ TEAM WINS BY SIX!
In the ‘A’ game, the Junior Lady Pups moved their record to an impressive 10-1 as they scored a 25-19 victory over Salina Lakewood, much thanks to a shutdown defense.
Only five girls put points by their name in the scorebook, with Karter Alvord leading the way with seven.
“The ladies played a great game on both ends,” noted the Junior Lady Pups Head Coach TJ Jackson. “First half scoring doesn’t show it, but our defense was great as we went into the halftime break up 8-5. Salina Lakewood is a talented team and our ladies did a wonderful job shutting down their chances to score. IN the second half we were able to take advantage of them playing zone and we have great athletes that were able to drive and collect some short buckets and draw some fouls. We were eight-for-eleven in free throws tonight and that was a big part of what we did for scoring in the second half.”
Coach Jackson concluded his post-game reflections by adding, “I was especially proud that we were able to put a lot of the ladies in and everyone delivered on one end of the court or the other. Coming off the Christmas break the ladies did a wonderful job of playing tough basketball and sticking with a fairly fast team.”
‘B’ TEAM EARNS 32-24 VICTORY!
In the 8th grade Junior Lady Pups ‘B’ game, they jumped out to an 11-2 lead by the end of the first quarter and then despite some struggles in the middle quarters, held on for the eight-point, 32-24 victory.
While eight Junior Lady Pups scored in the ‘B’ game, Gabriele Mason gained the high points for the day with 13.
According to ‘B’ team Coach Ellie Wingert, “The girls came out strong tonight, and this helped us win the game. They were up 11-2 at the end of the first quarter and even though we struggle in the second quarter, they did a wonderful job of fighting back to come away with the win. It was awesome to see every girl contribute to this game tonight, whether it was defensively or offensively, and I am proud of the hard work they showed coming back from a long break.”
